Recently my son was diagnosed with ADHD and I am struggling to cope

DEAR DEIDRE:  RECENTLY my son was diagnosed with ADHD and I am struggling to cope.

His behaviour and meltdowns are so hard sometimes. He has been offered medication but the side-effects worry me.

I struggle to discipline him and I am not sure of the right approach because I know it is not his fault and his brain works differently.

I am a 38-year-old single mum. He is seven.

I’m going insane not knowing what I should do when he trashes the house. I do my best but can’t help feeling like a horrible mum.

I worry someone will take him away from me.

DEIDRE SAYS:  It is important to remember that a child with ADHD cannot help their behaviour.

Watch for warning signs. If your son looks like he’s becoming frustrated, overstimulated and about to lose self-control, intervene by distracting him and if possible, taking him away from the situation.

You are doing your best by him so well done. A little support will help you both.

The National Attention Deficit Disorder Information and Support Service (addiss.org.uk) can help you understand your son’s behaviour better.
