Reality TV bride bludgeoned to death with a hammer – for ending secret affair
When it came to getting married, Lisa Marie Naegle was willing to take extreme measures to achieve perfection.
In 2010, she appeared on the US reality TV show Bridalplasty on E!.
It was a show where 12 brides-to-be moved into a mansion to compete across episodes for various cosmetic procedures, including breast implants, teeth veneers, liposuction and nose jobs.
The aim was to be the ‘perfect bride’, and the last woman standing would win an all-expenses-paid dream wedding as well as more surgery.
Fun, outgoing Lisa Marie from San Pedro, Los Angeles, was popular in the house and eventually came fourth in the competition.
The programme only lasted one series after facing criticism about encouraging women to have surgery, so Lisa Marie didn’t become a household name.
She was able to step back into her life and remain unrecognised.
In July 2011, Lisa Marie married Derek Harryman, a vessel operations superintendent at the Port of Los Angeles, and concentrated on her work as a nurse at a local medical centre.
She also taught nursing at West Los Angeles College.
Five years into their marriage, the couple were talking about starting a family but had encountered some fertility problems.
Meanwhile, a student started attending Lisa Marie’s class and caught her eye.
Jackie Jerome Rogers was attracted to Lisa Marie, too, and started to help out in her class to spend more time with her.
When they went out for lunch together, colleagues said the pair were flirty.
Sordid trysts
When Jackie passed his qualification, Lisa Marie took him on a trip to Las Vegas where they became intimate and started an affair.
They began to spend lots of time together and, as a cover story, Lisa Marie told her husband and family that Jackie was her ‘gay friend’.
When they went out drinking in bars together, it looked innocent.
Lisa Marie told Jackie she was unhappy in her marriage and he was smitten with the beautiful nurse.
But in December 2016, after just a few months of their affair, Lisa Marie, 36, started to cool things off.
She didn’t return all his messages and people noticed that there was tension between them.
For Jackie, then 34, the relationship was serious, but Lisa Marie wasn’t ready to walk away from her marriage.
In fact, she had an appointment to discuss fertility treatment so she could start a family with Derek.
On 17 December, 2016, Lisa Marie told Derek she was going to a birthday party with her brother.
In reality, she was going to an event at the Alpine Village restaurant in Torrance, California, with Jackie.
Derek went to work at the port and Lisa Marie went out with her lover.
She said she wouldn’t be home late as she was teaching on the Sunday.
When Derek got home after 2am, Lisa Marie wasn’t home so he sent her a text.
She replied at 2.45am and said she was going to get some food and then she’d be coming home.
But she didn’t.
Derek assumed his wife had stayed with her brother when she didn’t return home, but when Lisa Marie didn’t turn up for work, he knew something was wrong.
She was reported missing and a social media campaign was launched to try to find her.
‘Everyone is beyond frustrated, beyond worried,’ Derek said to the press.
‘I’m flipping out… We are trying to have a baby. We are looking forward to starting a family.’
Jackie was asked about the last time he saw the nurse.
He said he’d wanted to go home but Lisa Marie had wanted to stay at the party so he left without her.
But CCTV footage showed them leaving together and getting into Jackie’s car.
Jackie changed his story.
He said Lisa Marie had got into his car, but she’d got out quickly and they’d gone their separate ways.
Jackie was nervous and inconsistent with his story. It rang alarm bells with police.
When confronted with the CCTV footage, Jackie confessed to police what had happened that night.
He said he’d taken Lisa Marie to a fast-food restaurant for something to eat and they’d sat nearby in his car.
They’d started to argue because Lisa Marie said she wanted to make a go of things with her husband.
She wanted to break things off.
Jackie claimed Lisa Marie had started to hit him and he’d lashed out.
He grabbed a hammer that was in the car and slammed her with it, at least eight times.
Horrendous injuries
On 20 December, Jackie led police to where he’d buried Lisa Marie behind his house in Lennox, near Los Angeles International Airport.
She was face down and naked in a shallow grave in the back yard.
Before burying Lisa Marie, Jackie had hit her two more times with the hammer to make sure she was dead. Her skull was in pieces.
Although Jackie had cleaned his car, forensics found Lisa Marie’s blood in it.
There was also a hammer in his home that had her DNA on. Jackie was charged with murder.
At the trial at the end of last year, it was acknowledged by Jackie’s defence that it wasn’t a question about whether his client had committed the crime, but rather whether it had been a crime of passion or premeditated.
‘My client, Mr Rogers, is guilty,’ the lawyer told the judge.
But was the crime manslaughter or murder?
The defence said that Jackie had ‘just snapped’ after months of emotional abuse from Lisa Marie.
That he’d felt ‘toyed with’ and that when Lisa Marie had broken things off, he’d lost control in the heat of the moment.
After leaving the party, they had gone to the restaurant together.
Security cameras showed the car leaving the drive-thru then parking across the street.
Within 30 minutes, Lisa Marie was dead.
Jackie’s lawyer said Lisa Marie had pushed her lover to the brink – that she made fun of his looks and had hit him.
Because she told everyone that Jackie was her gay friend, he didn’t feel like he was being taken seriously.
But a colleague of Lisa Marie’s said they’d seen the hammer in Jackie’s car a month before the attack.
The prosecution suggested that it might have been premeditated – Jackie had just been waiting for the right moment because he knew she wasn’t serious about him.
There was no justification for the way he’d brutally bludgeoned Lisa Marie with a hammer and then tried to get away with it.
In September 2018, Jackie was found guilty of first-degree murder, and in April this year he was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.
Lisa Marie hadn’t found fame trying to be the ‘perfect bride’ but she found infamy in her death for being a flawed wife – something that should never have cost her life. ■
