Meghan Markle photo which caused palace to change social media rules after abuse

Earlier this week the Royal family took the unprecedented step of issuing a warning to social media trolls.

It followed instances of horrific verbal abuse directed at Meghan Markle and Kate on the Kensington Palace social media accounts.

It’s believed that one photo in particular attracted a deluge of negativity, prompting the palace to re-asses how the public interacted with royal stories and photos.

Back in December Meghan Markle delighted fans with her surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards.

Dressed in a black one-shouldered Givenchy gown, Meghan came on stage to present her wedding dress designer, Claire Waight Keller, with an award and was pictured cradling her growing bump, Mamamia reports.

After being shared on on  Hello magazine’s  social media accounts, it was met with a flood of abusive and cruel comments.

Social media users lashed out at Meghan and poked fun at her for touching her bump , and the abuse has escalated ever since.

It’s not just Meghan who has been a target of threats and vile comments – many of these have also been directed at the Duchess of Cambridge.

The full rules included calls for comments not to "contain spam, be defamatory of any person, deceive others, be obscene, offensive, threatening, abusive, hateful, inflammatory or promote sexually explicit material or violence" or "promote discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age".

It’s believed much of the abuse is driven as a sort of "war of words" between rival fans of the two royal women.
