Legendary broadcaster Brian Henderson dies aged 89

Legendary broadcaster and Australia’s longest-serving news presenter Brian Henderson has died aged 89 after a battle with cancer.

“Brian Henderson has passed away,” Today Extra co-host David Campbell said on Twitter on Thursday morning. “A legendary broadcaster and true gentleman. RIP to one of the greats.”

Henderson, who also hosted live music program Bandstand, retired from reading Sydney’s weeknight news in 2002, after his first broadcast with TCN in 1957.

He told Nine News in February 2020 he was facing a fifth cancer battle but had decided not to have an operation on his kidney.

“There’s no pain, I have no pain from it. So [I’ll] just waffle along,” he said.

“Let it be. If it’s not bothering me too much, hang on. Have a good life, which I’ve been having really. How could I not with the wife [Mardi] and grandkids I’ve got?”
