KEEPING the kids busy out of school costs time, energy and plenty of cash. Parents spend an average of £2,600 a year on entertaining their offspring, research shows.
But it need not cost the earth. Here is how to keep the kids active — and more cash in your pocket.
ADVENTURE TIME: One way of entertaining the kids is to leave it to the experts. So send them on one of activity adventure company PGL’s holiday camps for seven to 16-year-olds for two, three, four or even seven nights this October. Or you can opt for single activity days at £45 per child — and you can use your childcare vouchers to book.

CRAFTY KIDS: Check out hobbycraft.co. uk/store-events for crafting classes from £15. Visit your local council website, too.
With a quick search, I found the National Trust’s Pollok House in Glasgow is offering hour-long crafting classes (with tea or coffee for adults) for just £3. At Penffold Farm in Swansea, there is everything from pumpkin carving to broomstick making.
RUN WITH IT: If your little’uns are balls of energy, a Parkrun could be just the ticket. The 5km fun runs take place nationwide at 9am on Saturdays.
They are free for everyone, so mums and dads might want to dig out their trainers too. There are also special 2km junior runs for those aged four to 14. Visit parkrun.org.uk for details.
TRAIN ’EM UP: Most kids love jumping on the train. And you can now explore East Anglia for less after Greater Anglia launched a ticket sale offering 50,000 seats to and from London from just £5 for adults and £1 for children one-way.
The special “Autumn Hare fares” include routes from Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester and Southend Victoria.
The tickets, which can only be bought online or via Greater Anglia’s app, are available until October 31 for travel up to November 21.
