England was plunged into a second lockdown on November 5, with restrictions in place for a month to combat the spread of coronavirus. Non-essential shops and businesses have had to close their doors under the new lockdown rules, with restrictions in place until at least December 2.

Britons have been asked to work from home where possible, and only travel for essential reasons such as work, education and healthcare.

Dubbed lockdown 2.0, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said there was “no alternative” to England being placed back into a nationwide lockdown.

Pubs, bars and restaurants have now had to close, however food takeaways and deliveries are allowed.

All non-essential retail, leisure and entertainment venues must close – including hairdressers, beauty salons, bowling alleys and gyms.

Britons are banned from mixing with other households, except for support or childcare reasons.

However, you may exercise outdoors with one person from outside of your household as long as social distancing is adhered to.

Despite the strict shut down of the first lockdown, this time around schools, colleges, universities and nurseries have stayed open.

Supermarkets and stores dubbed as essential have also been permitted to stay open.

Unfortunately for those wanting to avoid the high street Poundland currently don’t offer a home delivery service.

However, strict social distancing measures are in place across stores.

These include hand sanitising stations, floor markings, screens at tills and mandatory face masks.

Speaking in May Poundland’s managing director Barry Williams explained the safety measures in the stores across the UK.

He said: “Throughout it all, as you would expect, our primary concern has been for the safety of our colleagues and customers.

“We have followed to the letter all the guidelines that came through on social distancing from Public Health England and the Government.

“We have had colleagues on the door to moderate numbers coming in. There are markers every two metres on the floors of stores and we have upgraded the hygiene regime including cleaning work stations and tills.

“We replenish the shelves in the evening so we don’t get in the way of customers and we have removed all barriers that could get in customers’ way. We have created as much space as we can and put in perspex screens at checkouts.

“Everything we could do we have done to protect colleagues and customers. It gives a high degree of confidence to our customers as well when they see we are taking these measures.”
