Inside horror closed Toby Carvery kitchen covered in waste with rancid floors

Foul pictures claim to show how filthy conditions were inside a Toby Carvery kitchen before it was shut down.

The Artichoke, a popular spot with local residents, was the first and original Toby Carvery in the country when it opened in 1974.

It recently closed for a big refurbishment, but after just three months it was shut down again following concerns over its “operational standards”.

Mitchells and Butlers, the group which manages Toby Carvery restaurants along with other well known brands, voluntarily took the decision to close it down on the day, reports Essex Live .

The rank pictures reveal gunk-encrusted wheels on trollies, rancid floors and equipment covered in old food, waste and dirt.

In a leaked email chain “seriously poor and illegal practices" were noted including disorganisation and circumstances where jobs were half completed during a revisit on January 18.

There was also ”inadequate preparation" of raw food and one chef had to be addressed on this by the person inspecting.

The restaurant’s bin yard was also "found to be dirty", with food and litter, and bins were "overflowing".

During another visit on similar issues were brought up including dirty cloths being used on the kitchen.

It was also noted that the business had rats outside.

A Toby Carvery spokesperson said: “We voluntarily took the decision to close the kitchen on Friday and again today to ensure we are adhering to our high operational standards.

“The kitchen will remain closed until we’re confident these high standards are being maintained.

“We have been working closely with the Environmental Health Agency and will continue to do so over the coming days.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

A Brentwood Borough Council spokeswoman said: "Brentwood Borough Council officers attended the Toby Carvery yesterday (February 13) and the premises closed at 8pm voluntarily.

"Environmental officers identified a number of cleaning issues and have attended again today (February 14).

"The premises has been deep cleaned and will continue to be monitored."
