I feel uncomfortable after my friend gave me an expensive PlayStation game for Christmas

DEAR DEIDRE: MY friend bought me a PlayStation game for Christmas, giving me strict instructions not to tell anyone. I’m a 17-year-old guy.

I bought my friends selection boxes, which is what they gave me – except one guy who hadn’t bought me anything.

He turned up at my house a couple of days after Christmas with a present.

I was shocked when it was this PlayStation game.

I appreciate the sentiment but don’t feel I can accept it.

I’m worried it’s something he was given as a present and has given it to me because he felt bad about not getting me anything. I’m sure he couldn’t afford it.

DEIDRE SAYS: It is over the top, particularly as your friend can’t afford it.

He sounds insecure and wants to “buy” your friendship.

Explain to him that his gift makes you feel uncomfortable.

Reassure him you value his friendship and appreciate his generosity but you can’t accept his gift.
