How to make a DIY macrame plant hanger

Since its heyday in the 70s, macrame has been having a resurgence over recent years.

And with our love for houseplants continuing to grow, a macrame plant hanger is an excellent choice for crafty shrub lovers looking to make their greenery stand out.

These creations not only look impressive but they also help by freeing up shelf space, as they can hang from the ceiling – or anything of your choosing really.

If you’re keen to give one a go yourself, here’s everything to know…

How to make a DIY macrame plant hanger

There are a number of tutorials explaining how to make these DIY plant holders, but one of the most popular ones on TikTok is by a user called @iridescent_fluorescence.

In her video she explains you’ll need scissors, macrame and a wooden loop – then simply follow these steps:

1. Measure out the macrame four times your wing span (you arms stretched out) and do this eight times.

2. Put them through the loop, find a hook and cut an extra piece, then make a loop with the extra string and wrap it around all of the other strings about eight times. Eventually, you’ll pull the string through the loop, so pull up the top and you’ll have an invisible knot keeping it all together – just cut off the extra bits.

3. Then grab four strings and with the one on the far left make a ‘number four shape.’ Then grab the far right one and make a ‘backwards four shape,’ then pull the string in front from the left side through the loop on the right and vica versa. Repeat the process with the right side. This is called a ‘square knot.’

4. Do this 10 times then repeat the process three more times with the other strings.

5. You can also do a ‘half square knot’ – making the ‘four’ with the far left string over all of the strings, over and over.

6. To hold your planter, take two cords next to each other and make a square knot.

7. After you do this a number of times, you’ll finish how you started with an extra string – so make a loop, wrap it around all the other strings, pull it through and make a hidden knot again.
