Gwyneth Paltrow Gets $1 In Damages After Winning Ski Lawsuit

Gwyneth Paltrow has won the ski accident lawsuit that was filed against her. Even though it was a multi-million-dollar case, the actress is only walking away with $1 in damages.

The lawsuit was  filed by a retired optometrist, Terry Sanderson, who accused Gwyneth of colliding with him on a ski slope in Park City, Utah in 2016. Sanderson was originally seeking $3.1 million in damages, arguing that the incident has left him with life-altering injuries. However, he later lowered the claim to $300,000.

The doctor’s legal team argued that Gwyneth was recklessly skiing down a mountain when she slammed into him, leaving him with broken ribs as well as brain damage. The plaintiff accused Gwyneth of leaving the scene of the collision, though she says she only did so when a park employee told her it was okay.

Gwyneth’s team also argued that Sanderson was the one who crashed into her. The actress also filed a countersuit, though she was only seeking $1 in damages.

Last week, a jury finally came to a verdict regarding the highly publicized case. They found that Sanderson hadn’t provided enough evidence to prove Gwyneth was responsible for the crash.

Following the jury’s decision, Gwyneth released a statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

“I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” the Goop founder stated. “I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case,”

However, even though the plaintiff was only ordered to pay Gwyneth $1 in damages, he could owe her close to a million dollars in legal fees, some experts are predicting.

Speaking to the New York Post, Salt Lake City-based personal injury attorney David Cutt explained, “This case has been going on for four or five years and has been very heavily litigated and then goes through an eight-day jury trial — her fees are going to be in the $800,000 to a million range.”

Personal injury lawyer David Spaulding had a more conservative estimate, suggesting the actress’ legal bills could be half a million. “She can obviously afford that. She probably got the best she could get and she probably litigated the heck out of it,” Spaulding remarked.

It remains unclear if Sanderson plans to appeal the jury’s decision.
