Google founders net worth: How much are Larry Page and Sergey Brin worth?

Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google as a research project 21 years ago. But on Tuesday, the pair announced they were stepping back from their day-to-day roles at the technology company. So during the dynamic duo’s illustrious career, just how extensive is the wealth the chief executive officer and the President have amassed?

In a blog post shared by the 46-year old co-founders on Tuesday, the pair announced they were planning to step back from their day-to-day duties.

In a joint letter, Mr Page and Mr Brin said: “Today, in 2019, if the company was a person, it would be a young adult of 21 and it would be time to leave the roost.

“While it has been a tremendous privilege to be deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the company for so long, we believe it’s time to assume the role of proud parents—offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!”

The pair added they intend to remain “actively involved as Board members, shareholders and co-founders”.

But they said would be stepping back as they believe it is “the natural time to simplify our management structure”.

They also declared there was “no better person” to lead the company into the future than Google’s CEO Sunday Pichai.

Mr Page and Mr Brin famously founded Google in a garage in California in 1998, before spinning it into a multi-billion pound company.

Then in 2015, Alphabet was created as part of a corporate restructuring of Google.

When Mr Page and Mr Brin launched Alphabet, Mr Page said the parent company would make the tech giant’s activities “cleaner and more accountable”.

He admitted that from the outset, some of Google’s interests “might seem very speculative or even strange” for the firm.

Mr Page added: “We are still trying to do things other people think are crazy but we are super-excited about.”

But now the reins will be given to fellow Stanford University alumni Mr Pichai.

Mr Pichai, 47, joined Google in 2004, having previously studied at Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania.

In a statement, Mr Pichai said: “The founders have given all of us an incredible chance to have an impact on the world.

“Thanks to them, we have a timeless mission, enduring values, and a culture of collaboration and exploration that makes it exciting to come to work every day.

“It’s a strong foundation on which we will continue to build.

“Can’t wait to see where we go next and look forward to continuing the journey with all of you.”

Between the two of them, Mr Page and Mr Brin have a controlling interest of more than 51 percent of the votes in Alphabet through a special class stock.

The personnel changes will see Mr Pichai take on the role of chief executive at Alphabet.

The Google founders had already become a less visible presence around the company they founded, taking increasingly less active roles in the various businesses that operated under the Alphabet umbrella.

But now the pair are stepping back further to enable Alphabet to become a more “mature” company.

Mr Page and Mr Brin are ranked as the 10th and 14th richest individuals in the world by Forbes in 2018.

Larry Page, the former Chief Executive Officer at Alphabet, is worth $59.3bn (£45.64bn).

Sergey Brin, the President of Alphabet, is worth roughly $56.6bn (£43.56bn).
