Former ballerina with Alzheimer's transforms when she hears the Swan Lake music

A video has shown the incredible moment a former prima ballerina with Alzheimer’s remembers the choreography when she hears the music from Swan Lake.

Marta C Gonzalez, who was a prima ballerina with the New York Ballet in the 1960s. is seen sitting in her wheelchair at a care home in Valencia.

A carer guves her headphones and plays Tschaikovsky’s Swan Lake – which Marta danced to at the height of her professional dancing career.

Almost instantly, Marta reacts to the music and her hands instinctively complete the movements she performed on stage in 1967.

She continues to follow the music and gracefully mark out the choreography she danced to 50 years ago.

The emotional moment, captured before Ms Gonzalez died in 2019, was shared by the Asociacion Musica para Despertar, a Spanish charity which uses the music of dementia patients’ lives to improve their mood and memory.

After finishing her performance, she is met with applause from people in the care home.

Marta is then comforted by a carer after saying that the music and the dancing has made her ’emotional’.

‘The power of music is immeasurable,’ the charity said. ‘May she rest in peace.’

Actor Antonio Banderas shared the clip on Facebook, where it recieved thousands of reactions and shares.

’53 years ago she was a NYC Ballet dancer,’ he wrote. ‘Tchaicovsky’s music managed to mock his Alzheimer’s. It’s been a year since all of this.

‘Now on the occasion of your passing, serve the dissemination of these images as a well deserved recognition of your art and your passion.

‘RIP Marta C. Gonzalez.’
