'Demon Slayer' Game Adds 2 Demon Characters in First Update

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles was released on Oct. 14, and the video game is already receiving its first free update this November. Starting Nov. 3, players can download two new playable Demon Slayer characters into the game. Fans have wondered whether they’d be able to play as demons at some point, and the latest DLC makes that possible. Here’s what you need to know.

‘Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles’ update makes Rui and Akaza playable characters

Demon Slayer announced on Twitter that the first update to The Hinokami Chronicles would arrive on Nov. 3, a promise Aniplex and CyberConnect2 followed up on shortly after. The DLC has officially launched worldwide, and it brings two playable demon characters into the Demon Slayer game: Rui and Akaza.

Fans of the anime will remember Rui from season 1’s Natagumo Mountain Arc, where Tanjiro and Nezuko fought the demon after taking on his entire family. Rui is a member of the Twelve Kizuki, landing at Lower Rank Five. Players can officially recreate his battle with Tanjiro in The Hinokami Chronicles thanks to the DLC.

Akaza shows up during the Mugen Train Arc covered in the Demon Slayer movie (and currently being rehashed in season 2 of the anime). He’s also associated with the Twelve Kizuki, claiming Upper Rank Three. He’ll likely prove a powerful opponent in-game, so players won’t want to miss this update.

Is the DLC free for PlayStation and Xbox?

The new DLC for Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is available free of charge on all the platforms the game currently runs on. Those include PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

Unfortunately, the game isn’t available on Nintendo Switch and hasn’t announced plans to change that anytime soon. Some fans are hopeful it will come to the system eventually, but there’s no word on whether that’s a possibility.

Will there be more ‘Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles’ updates?

The DLC for Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles is one of three updates currently planned for the game. Although the other two have yet to receive tentative release timelines, they promise to add even more new characters into the mix. Rui and Akaza won’t be the only demons available in the fighting game for long.

According to Dual Shockers, each DLC will contain two new playable characters, adding six in total once they’re all available. As for which characters fans will see, they might coincide with the arrival of Demon Slayer Season 2’s Entertainment District Arc in December. So far, the characters hail mostly from the anime’s first season. That could change as new episodes of Demon Slayer air.

Of course, there are plenty of characters from season 1 the game could introduce — including Muzan Kibutsuji. The anime’s Big Bad isn’t yet available in The Hinokami Chronicles, but his addition makes the most sense given his importance in Tanjiro’s story.

Fans will need to wait until more updates are announced. Thankfully, they have Rui and Akaza to keep them occupied in the meantime. There’s also the anime’s second season, which airs new episodes every Sunday.
