Catherine Deneuve’s YSL couture fetches $1M at auction
Catherine Deneuve has collected a lot of priceless pieces over the years — and now, her vintage treasures are finding new homes.
The French actress, 75, auctioned off more than 300 Yves Saint Laurent items from her personal collection on Thursday, raising 900,625 euros ($1.02 million), according to Christie’s.
Highlights included the gold velvet gown Deneuve wore to the 2000 Academy Awards, a black strapless frock with pink ostrich feathers sported at the 1993 Academy Awards and a sequin dress from 1969, which Deneuve wore while meeting Alfred Hitchcock at an awards show.
It seems the star had second thoughts about parting with certain pieces, however: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Deneuve took back a trench coat she originally meant to include in the sale.
The auctioned items were collected from the film star’s various estates, some stored in attics while others were lost among racks of clothes.
The actress met Yves Saint Laurent – then a young emerging designer just four years out of a designing role at Christian Dior — in 1965, when she could not find something proper to wear while meeting the Queen of England. They were close friends and collaborators for the following 40 years. The legendary designer died in 2008.
Deneuve has not disclosed how the funds raised will be allocated. The auction runs until January 30.
