Cat Saves Florida Couple from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: We Would Have 'Never Woken Up'
A Florida couple is praising their pet cat for saving their lives after the animal’s cries alerted them to carbon monoxide filling their home, reports say.
Paul and Leona Jones of Deltona rushed inside their home from a heavy rainstorm last Wednesday and forgot to turn off their car after pulling into their garage, according to WLKY. They had no idea that the poisonous gas was filling their home overnight — until they heard the Bella the cat’s cries.
“If she hadn’t cried and woken [Paul] up, we would have never known and we would have slept through it and never woken up.” Leona said, according to WLKY.
The car ran for about eight hours with Leona admitting, “I just didn’t hear the engine running and I didn’t hit the button,” according told KFOR. At 1 a.m., Paul awoke to Bella’s cries and pulled the cat out from under the bed.
“Then I collapsed on the bed,” he said. When Leona woke up, she was weak from inhaling the odorless gas and was barely able to call 911.

Firefighters arrived, gave Leona and Paul oxygen and rushed them to the hospital, according to KFOR. Leona said Paul was in bad shape when firefighters arrived, according to KSEE.
“He was close to death,” she said. “I wasn’t quite bad, but he was close to death.”
Now, the Joneses are suffering some muscle weakness and confusion, but are otherwise okay, according to KSEE. They have also placed reminder signs in their garage to prevent future mistakes, WLKY reported.
As for Bella, the couple has been giving the life-saving cat extra treats.
