You’ve been keeping your loofah for far too long – how often you should change it and why it can actually make you sick

MOST people can tell when it's time to replace their toothbrushes.

But that may not be the case with loofahs, and forgetting to do so regularly can have some pretty severe consequences.

A woman named Cee Cee on TikTok revealed that loofahs should be replaced every three to four weeks because of harbored bacteria.

Cee Cee suggested using an African exfoliating net instead, which she claimed can last over two years and are more hygienic.

Meanwhile, a dermatologist named Melissa Piliang, M.D. explained exactly why you may want to think twice about your loofah.

Dr. Piliang told the Cleveland Clinic that scrubbed off dead skin cells can get stuck in the loofah's nooks and crannies, plus the shower keeps them extra germy.

"They don’t ever totally dry out, so the loofah is a beautiful breeding ground for bacteria," she explained.

Additionally, she said they can grow fungal organisms, which can lead to skin infections especially if you use one right after shaving.

She advised replacing your loofah every three to weeks, but only if it's made of a natural material.

If you use a plastic one, those can last up to two months, however, you should replace your loofah immediately if you see mold or notice a musty odor, she said.

Rather than a loofah, consider scrubbing down with a washcloth instead.

They are much less likely to hold on to any bacteria or dead skin thanks to their physical makeup, and people tend to wash them more often in the shower, Dr. Piliang said.

Additionally in bath news, people are left speechless after one woman showed off her whopping bath product collection.

Also, you may be cleaning your bath all wrong, but luckily there's a super speedy way to clean instead.
