You’re probably not washing your pyjamas enough & leaving it too long could be making EVERYTHING in your wardrobe dirty

EVEN though it feels like we spend all-day, everyday doing laundry, we hardly ever seem to make a dent in the washing basket.

So it's hardly surprising that we don't wash our PJs all that often – even though we wear them as much (if not MORE) than our favourite t-shirts and jeans.

Well according to the experts at IceWear, this is something we should be doing every three to four days – or at least, once a week. Whoops.

Fashion Marketing expert Harpa Gretarsdóttir explained: "Pyjamas are the only intimate clothing we tend to wear multiple times as standard, with many wearing pyjamas as the only layer and without underwear beneath.

"This intimacy against our skin and parts of our bodies, for 6 to 8 hours a night under bedding, makes them a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and other germs."

Just like you wouldn't repeatedly wear the same sweaty gym clothes, Harpa said you should wash your PJs after three or four nights to prevent a build-up of sweat in your bed.

How often should you wash your PJs?

  • Harpa Gretarsdóttir, recommends washing pyjamas after three to four nights of wearing them. If you bathe or shower before bedtime, you can extend this period of wearing without washing to 5 or 7 nights, maximum.
  • Ensure you have multiple set of pyjamas and/or nightwear
  • Wash pyjamas in a ‘hot’ wash – 60c or higher – to cleanse the fabrics. However, if you prefer a cool wash (which can provide a softer feel to clothes) be sure to add a laundry product that has disinfectant to kill 99.9% of harmful bacteria.
  • Tumble and air dry as soon as the wash is finished
  • Store in a dry drawer or wardrobe
  • Where possible, sync your washing and pyjama wearing cycles with your partner to lessen any potential spread

Or if this sounds like too much effort, the expert says you can go seven nights in a row in the same PJs if you bathe before bed.

However, if you're a particularly sweaty person then Harpa says daily washes are key.

"Not only does a lack of washing and changing pyjamas create a dirty and smelly environment," she continued. "But it can also allow infection and irritation causing germs and ‘build-up’ to come into contact with wounds or other parts of the body that could make us sick, or lead to outbreaks of acne and other skin issues."

On top of this, Harpa says not washing your PJs often will "contaminate" the rest of your wardrobe too.

"Particulates and microbes in the grime on our pyjamas can often be transferred onto other items, such as underwear which allows various ‘nasties’ to contaminate articles of clothing we wear close to the skin," she added. "[This can then] potentially spreading harmful bacteria and fungi to the rest of your wardrobe, or even that of your flatmates, partner, or family."
