What's the difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke and when did Coke Zero Sugar launch?

IT is the most iconic fizzy drink in the world and it has just launched a brand new product.

Coca Cola has introduced Coke Zero Sugar to the UK market alongside the original flavour and Diet Coke. Here's everything you need to know…

What is the difference between Diet Coke and Coke Zero?

Diet Coke and Coke Zero may seem like the same thing as neither contains sugar or has any calories.

But according to Coca Cola, the taste and ingredients in them is what sets them apart.

Unlike Coke Zero, Diet Coke does not contain potassium citrate or acesulfame potassium.

This means that Coke Zero is closer in taste to the original taste while Diet Coke is much lighter on the tastebuds.

The company said: "Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is a new and improved sugar free cola, that looks and tastes even more like Coca-Cola Classic, but without the sugar.

"It replaces Coca-Cola Zero, which we launched in 2006, and is the next step in our strategy to help people reduce their sugar intake."

When did Coke Zero Sugar launch?

A new product, Coke Zero Sugar launched in 2016, and following its roll-out in the market there are now variations of the brand, including vanilla, peach and cherry.

The new name is intended to make clearer that the drink has no sugar, and the new recipe is intended to make it taste more like regular Coke.

Over time, it is intended to replace Coke Zero, which is set to be discontinued.

After launching in the US, so far the reviews have been positive.

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is available in a range of sizes including:

  • 150ml can
  • 250ml can
  • 330ml can
  • 330ml contour glass bottle
  • 500ml bottle
  • 1.25L bottle
  • 1.75L bottle
  • 6 x 330ml can multipack
  • 8 x 330ml can multipack

What's the sugar content?

The drink is part of the global company's drive to reduce sugar.

When announcing the launch, Coca-Cola said: "The launch of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is the latest action from Coca-Cola Great Britain to promote moderation and choice and help people reduce their sugar and calorie intake."

The nutritional information claims it contains 0g of sugar.

What is the original Coca Cola recipe?

The recipe is supposed to be so secretive that only two employees know it any one time.

It was invented in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton before being bought out by businessman Asa Griggs Candler.

The only official written copy of the recipe is apparently held in a US bank vault.

Some of the ingredients are already known – including vanilla, caramel and caffeine – but a crucial part of the formula has been given the name '7X'.

A couple of years ago, author Mark Prendergast claimed to have found the full recipe in a formula book owned by the company's founder.

If true, the secret 7X ingredients include alcohol, coriander, cinnamon, orange, lemon and nutmeg oil and neroli.

The closest the company itself has come to divulging its recipe was the admission that it originally included cocaine, although the narcotic was removed in the early 1900s.
