Treat the family this Christmas with a bizarre sausage wreath — we taste options for your feast
You can find edible garlands such as turkey and cranberry, and pork and chutney in the supermarkets. There is also a veggie one. GIULIA CROUCH tried a few to see if they were to her taste.
Waitrose sausage wreath with cranberry glaze
- £6.99 from Waitrose — buy now
NOW this is a bold move for your dinner table, but it’s a tasty one.
Three types of sausage – savoury sage and spinach, sweet cranberry and beetroot, and chestnut and apple – are plaited together.
Waitrose describes it as “visually stunning” but the garland has divided opinion online with some calling it “the stuff of nightmares”.
OK, it does look a little bit like a small intestine, but what really matters is the taste – and who could be unhappy with that many sausages on their plate?
Asda pork, turkey and cranberry wreath
- £5 from Asda — buy now
THIS is just like a Christmas dinner but wrapped in pastry.
It's a complete delight. And at just a fiver it's an absolute bargain.
The cranberry and subtle apple brings a traditionally festive sweet flavour, while the meaty menu of turkey pork and mix of herbs and spices is satisfyingly savoury.
It is topped with pastry stars and gets the thumbs up from me. This festive wreath is an undisputed crowd-pleaser.
Lidl British pork, red onion, chutney roll garland
- £3.69 from Lidl
THIS pastry is crunchy on the outside, addictively soft on the inside and the filling is a perfect balance of sweet and savoury notes.
The addition of a whack of cheddar makes the garland sing with flavour and elevates this wreath to a whole new level.
Amazingly, this is also the cheapest of all the meaty candidates so it is a real winner all round.
Marks & Spencer Christmas sausage roll garland
- £8 from M&S — buy now
THOSE who smack their lips at the mere thought of more traditional sausage rolls will probably want to plump for this offering.
It is not over-complicated and delivers a satisfying porky flavour.
It may not appear as festive as the others, but given all the other rich and indulgent tastes at Christmas this may not be a bad thing.
A solid choice to serve as a party snack – and good value for money.

Lidl woodland mushroom and red onion chutney roll garland
- £3.69 from Lidl
A GREAT option for veggies who want a slice of the festive wreath action.
The filling is generous and sweet thanks to the chutney.
The mushrooms are hearty and substantial, making an excellent substitute for meat.
Cranberries and apricots are both fiercely festive, while the seeds on top provide a nice crunch.
