Royal Variety Performance viewers say Meghan Markle 'doesn't get British humour' as she 'fake laughs' at Greg Davies' opening act

Host Greg Davies' comedy intro saw him recall the funny things his mum and her friend Pat have said about the royal family – including a bizarre joke about swans which had both Prince Harry and his American bride confused.

Fans at home said they felt sorry for the 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex as she looked baffled about some of the jokes, with three hours of the variety show ahead of her.

One asked: "Do you think when Meghan Markle dreamed of being a Princess she ever thought it would involve spending 3 hours watching Rick Astley, Clean Bandit and Mr Gilbert from The Inbetweeners?"

A second said: "Watching #RoyalVarietyPerformance for Hamilton. But also to see Meghan look really confused over British humour".

And a third said: "I don't think Meghan got the joke… that fake laugh weren't kidding me!"

Although Meghan did appear to have a genuine chuckle at Greg's joke about her receiving a bunch of carrots from one well-wisher in Australia, both she and Harry appeared stumped over his swan joke.

Greg recalled a bizarre conversation with his mum, who said: "You know what worries me? I'm worried that the Queen owns all of the swans in this country. I'd hate to get in trouble if I ate one."

When the comedian asked if she was planning to eat one, she replied: "Not on purpose".

To be honest we don't really get that one either…

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were representing the Queen at the event, which was pre-recorded in November and airs on ITV tonight.
