PUMA Dips Into the Archive for '80s-Inspired Collection

PUMA has revealed a new collection of archival footwear, bringing four sneakers from the 1980s into the present day. A focal point for the capsule is the Bluebird, with three releases themed around St. Petersburg, Amsterdam and New York all set to arrive alongside a Madrid London sneaker.

The PUMA Bluebird can trace its roots back to U.K. terrace culture in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Based on a 1982 indoor training shoe, the sneaker takes its name from Cardiff City FC, who are affectionately known as the Bluebirds. For the St. Petersburg release, PUMA has looked to the Russian city’s coat of arms, referencing its blue ribbon, red shield and silver anchors through the colors across the sneaker’s suede upper and leather overlays.

The Amsterdam sneaker, dressed in a bright orange colorway, is inspired by the PUMA Cruyjff Royal, a signature sneaker for legendary footballer Johan Cruyjff. For the NYC-themed release, PUMA has continued its sporting influence. This time referencing a 1-of-1 sneaker made for American football quarterback and Hall of Famer Joe Namath in the 1970s, the sneaker features a white upper with light blue detailing.

The last sneaker in the pack is the Madrid London, which is due to release in an eye-catching purple and orange colorway. Referencing the first Madrid release in 1983, the sneaker features suede upper, leather overlays and gold foiling atop a classic gum rubber sole.

The St. Petersburg and Amsterdam-themed Bluebird releases and the Madrid London are available now from stockists including Hanon. The Bluebird NYC is due to follow on September 17.

In other footwear news, PUMA recently signed a long-term deal with Neymar.
