Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were ‘absolutely right’ to step down from the royal family, says Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren "applauds" Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step back from royal duties.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they are quitting as senior royals in January and will be formally stepping down on March 31.

Speaking with Variety, London-born actress Helen, 74, said that while it would be a loss to the public, she thought their instincts were "absolutely right".

Helen said: "Meghan Markle was a fantastic addition to the royal family – charming, did everything right, was gracious, was sweet-natured, and seemed to be … Wow! What a lovely addition. Didn't seem to be neurotic…

"I think it is a loss in a way, but at the same time I think their instincts are absolutely correct".

The Oscar-winning actress played a royal herself when she took on the role of Her Majesty in the 2006 film, The Queen, which detailed the events that took places following the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

This news comes after fashion designer Paul Costelloe – who worked with the late Princess Diana – gave insight into how she may have felt about Megxit, claiming that she "wouldn't be upset" by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle "stepping back".

Speaking to Evoke during the recent London Fashion Week, the Irish designer, 74, suggested that his friend –  who passed away in 1997 – would have been supportive of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision.

He said: "She was not a royalist at all, she was a person of the people and she put her children first before anything else.

"She would say 'Do what you need to do', definitely."

Paul, who dressed Diana until her death aged 36, first met Harry's mum when she visited his Windsor shop in 1982.

He said: "She was lovely to dress and she was a very honest, sincere person. She was family orientated and she had a sense of humour – she liked to smile."
