I'm an Irish traveller & was forced to marry at 16, I woke up to find a wedding dress – it was the worst day of my life

AN Irish traveller has claimed she was forced to marry at just 16-years-old, admitting it was the "worst day of my life."

Bridget Wall, now in her late twenties, regularly shares insights into her life on TikTok, and revealed that she didn't know about the planned wedding until the morning of.

Now a mum-of-three, Bridget admitted the marriage didn't work out, and by the age of 23 she was already divorced.

After claiming her parents made the decision to marry her off as a teen, she explained in a video: "I was forced to get married, I never even knew about me own wedding until that day. I didn't know I was getting married until the morning of my sixteenth birthday."

And added: "I woke up and there was the big white wedding dress and I was forced to be married."

Many of Bridget's TikTok followers were sympathetic of her situation, with a handful questioning if the marriage worked out.

But it "didn't really work out that good," she claimed, adding that she was "abused two weeks into the marriage" which ultimately led to their divorce seven years later.

She said: "It wasn't a good marriage but I was a child, shouldn't have been into it. It is what it is."

Previously, Caitlin and Lizzy Mac, 18 and 20, travellers who live in St Albans, Herts, told Fabulous that marriages aren't always as they seem.

In fact, according to the sisters, marriages aren't arranged and they "don't know where the idea came from."

“We do not have arranged marriages, that was maybe a couple of hundred years ago. I don’t know where that idea came from," Lizzy said.

“And to marry a non-traveller depends on what family you have. Some families accept non-travellers but others are very strict."

But Bridget explained in a separate clip in TikTok why she thinks some families still arrange marriages for their kids.

I woke up and there was the big white wedding dress and I was forced to be married.

She claimed: "The reason why they arrange marriages is because they don't want them to marry out of the travelling community. Basically, they pick who they want for their children because they like that family and they know them well.

"Sometimes they'll even marry their own first cousins, but that's very rare. That was years ago kind of stuff. They hardly do that anymore.

"But now some people do still arrange marriages and there's nothing the girl can do, she has to listen to her parents."

She also said that the girl can choose her husband in some families but he "he has to be a traveller, they have to still come from the travelling community."
