Grandad, 87, BEATS coronavirus and bids an emotional goodbye to NHS staff as he heads home to be with his wife


THIS is the wonderful moment an 87-year-old man LEAVES hospital after fighting coronavirus for two weeks.

Ewart Lockton, from Manchester, had been battling the virus in North Manchester Hospital but yesterday left – in the arm of an NHS hero.

His granddaughter Sophie Edwards shared the news on her Facebook page.

Her post has rapidly gone viral with 52,000 people sharing it.

She said: "We all need to hear some positive stories…

"This is my 87-year-old grandpa saying goodbye to staff at North Manchester Hospital where he’s been for two weeks with covid positive pneumonia."

She continued: "He’s now finishing his recovery where he belongs, at home with my grandma!

Thank you to everyone for all their kindness and support through a difficult time and most of all…..thanks to the NHS!!"

Her post garnered a huge response.

One person said: "What a man what a medical team good luck to you all."

Another added: "What a man, what a medical team, good luck to you all."

Sophie's news came as The Sun revealed an army of half a million Brits responded to calls to support the UK’s most vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.

People signed up to the National Help Service at a rate of five per second yesterday, as health chiefs were “blown away” by the big-hearted response.

By last night, NHS England said the number of volunteers had reached 504,000 — greater than the population of Coventry.

He’s now finishing his recovery where he belongs, at home with my grandma!

The new NHS Volunteer Responders force will be tasked with delivering vital medicines and shopping to 1.5million patients isolating from the killer virus.

Officials had initially planned to recruit 250,000 healthy helpers after launching the scheme on Tuesday.

But after hitting their target in just half a day — thanks to the huge generosity of the British public — NHS leaders now want 750,000 to join the volunteer force.

Boris Johnson offered a “special thank you”.

Speaking at a Downing Street briefing, the Prime Minister said the volunteers “will be absolutely crucial in the fight against this virus”.

Desperate mums were forced to turn to eBay for baby milk after shops sold out – and were shocked to find it on sale for £155.
