Biggest fashion hits and misses of 2023

_

2023 is already half over! We’re weighing in on some of the best and worst fashion of the year so far, starting with this look…

Yikes! Irina Shayk’s look at the “Firebrand” premiere during the Cannes Film Festival on May 21 left a lot to be desired…. like a top half. The Mowalola design included a barely-there crossover crop top paired with an insanely low-waisted black-and-red skirt for a head-scratching combination that felt way too tacky for the film festival.

Dua Lipa dove into the Chanel archives for her Met Gala outfit on May 1, resulting in one of the best looks of the night. The phenomenal 1992 white-and-black tweed ballgown epitomized classic Chanel staples while the silhouette allowed for a regal moment. And her Tiffany & Co jewelry was equally stunning…

Dua Lipa’s necklace wasn’t just any Tiffany & Co. piece — it featured a diamond over 100 carats. Called the Legendary diamond, the massive stone was set amongst even more diamonds on the Lucida Star necklace. It’s meant to pay tribute to the famous yellow Tiffany diamond with a similar cushion cut.

Yikes! Heidi Klum often rocks some outlandish looks on the red carpet, but this one at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10 might take the cake. The model arrived in this insane Kevin Germanier minidress that included a purple feathered strip atop an otherwise silver sequined and sheer design. Silver strappy heels and a silver clutch completed this costume-like look.

_

Miranda Kerr reminded us all that she’s a true supermodel when she arrived at the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Los Angeles on April 15 in this impossibly glamorous Zuhair Murad gown. The sleek black pick included a sweetheart neckline and off-the-shoulder sleeves, a fitted bodice and a slinky mermaid-style skirt. A red lip, updo and a stunning diamond necklace from Rahaminov Diamonds rounded out this red carpet look.

_

It’s giving… matronly “I Dream of Jeannie’! Gwyneth Paltrow attended The Daily Front Row’s Seventh Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards in Beverly Hills on April 24 in this getup from her own brand, G. Label by goop. The two-piece look had an interesting silhouette — a cropped turtleneck with dramatic sheer sleeves and a train detail paired with wide-legged trousers — but that dull beige color is where things went wrong.

_

Jennifer Lawrence dazzled in Dior Haute Couture at the “Anatomie d’une Chute” premiere during the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 21. From the thin straps and the fitted waist to the full skirt and the matching wrap she sported around her arms, the ruby red shade and dreamy silhouette made this one of our all-time favorite looks on the A-lister. But when she lifted her gown, we were all in for quite a surprise…

_

Jennifer Lawrence sported black flip-flops underneath her stunning red Dior dress… a major fashion faux pas!

_

Well, that’s one way to stay warm! Kylie Jenner attended the Schiaparelli fashion show in Paris on Jan. 23 in a slinky black dress accessorized with a faux lion’s head — a very bizarre addition of warmth that we’re still wrapping our head around.

_

Margot Robbie took a break from Barbie pink for the “Asteroid City” premiere in New York City on June 13. The star arrived in this darling Schiaparelli black-and-white minidress with a sweetheart neckline and a velvet corset and peplum detail that flowed into a pleated white skirt. Black pointy-toe pumps rounded out the great ensemble.

_

Considering Lizzo wore one of our favorite looks of all time to the Grammys back in 2020 (who could forget that dreamy white Versace number?!), we had high hopes for her red carpet getup at the Grammys on Feb. 5 this year. Unfortunately, it’s about that time to put her on the year’s miss list. The superstar arrived in this Dolce & Gabbana disaster — a corset-style bright orange gown topped with a wild flower-embellished red cape.

_

Priyanka Chopra made a romantic statement at a screening of her film “Love Again” in New York City on May 3, arriving in this dreamy baby blue Nina Ricci number. From the ruching on the bodice of the off-the-shoulder confection to the way the skirt exploded at the knee, everything about this dazzling dress was over the top and fabulous.

_

Kristen Stewart really let us down at the Met Gala on May 1, arriving in a messy black-and-white Chanel suit comprised of a cropped tuxedo shirt, baggy black trousers, a bolero jacket and a Chanel logo belt. Black-and-white loafers from the brand finished off this disappointing look.

_

Stunning in Celine! “The Great” star Elle Fanning epitomized the title of her show at a screening for its third season in Los Angeles on May 11, sporting this sparkly, slinky creation. The spaghetti-strap gown with a plunging neckline evoked serious regal glamour and her slicked-back updo served as the perfect complement.

_

“The Little Mermaid” star Halle Bailey clearly got inspiration from her character, Ariel, when picking this seafoam green Dolce & Gabbana confection for the Academy Awards on March 12. We loved the strapless neckline paired with a full tulle skirt.

_

Shania Twain embraced a cow-inspired motif in this black-and-white spotted pantsuit by Harris Reed for the Grammys on Feb. 5. The star added a wild hat to the mix — a mushroom-shaped topper that Super Mario’s Toadie would be proud of! — plus a bold red wig.

_

We always welcome a dash of bubblegum pink, so Julia Garner’s frothy Gucci pick was widely welcomed at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10. We adored every inch of this pick from the jeweled straps to the ruffled tiers. She added even more sparkle with De Beers jewelry.

_

We adored how Melissa McCarthy opted for a real under-the-sea shade — a stunning deep blue — for the Taller Marmo gown she wore to the world premiere of Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” in Hollywood on May 8, but her styling lost us. Those gloves ruined an otherwise exceptional look — check out those shoes! — and gave things a costume feel.

_

Even though spring was still around the corner at this point, Angela Bassett summoned it early in this dreamy pale pink-and-lilac Pamella Roland number she wore to the BAFTA Awards on Feb 19. We loved the halter neck, those dreamy oversized sleeves and her statement clutch.

_

Though we bet Priyanka Chopra stayed cozy at the January launch of her limited-edition Universal Colour Collection with Max Factor in London on Jan. 10, we’re not sure it was worth it with this wild getup. The star opted for various shades of brown — from her turtleneck dress to her massive camel coat — and added thigh-high boots to complete her strange wintery ensemble.

_

Pretty in hot pink! Kate Hudson wowed in a neon pink Tamara Ralph gown with one off-the-shoulder sleeve and one dramatic ruffled one plus a plunging neckline, all paired with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Los Angeles on March 12.

_

We love a good summer white moment, but we weren’t wild about the silhouette of the Carolina Herrera gown Scarlett Johansson wore to the “Asteroid City” premiere in New York City on June 13. From the drop waist to the halter straps to the massive floral detail at the neckline, this one felt dated and underwhelming.

_

We were wild about Lea Michele’s Emilia Wickstead pick for the Tony Awards in New York City on June 11… especially the unexpected red-and-white color palette. The thin straps and straight neckline paired with a drop waist and full skirt were just icing on the cake.

_

Victoria Justice sported this… interesting combo while attending the Revolve Festival during Coachella on April 16. And while there are certainly different fashion rules at the music festival, we’re not sure this look — with elements like green feathered trim on her unnecessarily sheer long-sleeved Farradas cardigan’s sleeves and a White Fox pink bikini top paired with cutoffs and magenta knee-high cowboy boots — followed any of them.

_

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wowed in Valentino at the “Club Zero” premiere during the Cannes Film Festival on May 22, selecting this dreamy black-and-white design. The asymmetrical dress included one long sleeve and one sleeveless side and a massive romantic white bow affixed to the hip. A knee-high slit on that same side showed off her pointy-toe pumps.

_

Anya Taylor-Joy seriously underwhelmed on Critics Choice Awards night on Jan. 15, arriving in this Christian Dior design. Though it started out strong — those delicate spaghetti straps and subtle sparkly embellishments stunned — it lost us with that entirely sheer midi-length skirt.

_

Zendaya stunned in an Indian designer for the inaugural gala hosted by the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, India, on April 1. The star arrived in this eye-catching Rahul Mishra ensemble that included elegant draping, a golden embellished bralette and a beautiful dark purple train with floral embellishments floating on it. Bulgari jewels completed this standout look.

_

What’s going on here, Taraji P. Henson? The actress stepped out in New York City on April 6 looking like she wrapped herself up in a comfy blanket, but the ensemble was actually a Marc Jacobs look plucked off the runway. Cartoon-ish platform boots and leather gloves rounded out this truly bizarre ensemble.

_

Cara Delevingne looked ravishing in red on Academy Awards night on March 12 in this show-stopping Elie Saab selection that evoked Old Hollywood glamour. A dramatic bow detail at the sleeve paired with an asymmetrical neckline struck just the right balance while a thigh-high slit showed off her matching Stuart Weitzman sandals. Stunning Bulgari jewels — including a subtle serpent diamond necklace and beautiful diamond-covered hoops — were the perfect finishing touches.

_

Fashionista Julia Garner often takes risks on the red carpet, so we weren’t surprised by this funky Ferragamo outfit she wore to the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 15. Unfortunately, this time it didn’t pay off. The top half of the design was completely see-through so she rocked a Skims bra underneath, then there’s that high-low hemline — two trends we wish we saw less of in 2023. Despite not liking the dress, we loved her matching red Stuart Weitzman heels.

_

Michelle Yeoh can always be counted upon for a high-fashion moment, so this pantsuit — complete with a cape! — from Christian Dior was no surprise. The unique silhouette and the stunning soft pink shade were a breath of fresh air on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards on Feb. 19.

_

We weren’t wild about Lily James’ severe Met Gala look on May 1. The star’s Tamara Ralph Couture ballgown paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld — the inspiration for the evening — by rocking one of the late designer’s favorite fabrics: leather. The nod was sweet, but we weren’t crazy about this black dress. She also added blunt bangs and showed off a super-dark hair shade on fashion’s biggest night.

_

Kerry Washington was a welcome breath of fresh air in this standout Armani Privé design at the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 15. The strapless silver sequined dress included a sweetheart neckline and fun hot pink and electric blue embellishments. Bulgari jewels rounded out this memorable fashion moment.

_

Carrie Underwood put her muscular stems on display on CMT Music Awards night, rocking this dazzling Dolce & Gabbana number on April 2. The country superstar’s jumpsuit featured shimmering embellishments we loved, but we weren’t wild about the proportions. The top half featured a high neck and long sleeves while the bottom was barely there.

_

Naomi Campbell matched the red carpet — while also infusing a dash of pink via a wispy cape — at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Killers of the Flower Moon” on May 20. The Valentino look, which included a stunning cherry red ballgown with cutouts down the bodice, became an instant favorite at the film festival.

_

Skirts seriously trended this spring, as exemplified by Elle Fanning. The fashionista attended an event for her Hulu series “The Great” in Los Angeles on May 10 in this unexpected but oddly perfect pairing — a gray tee topping a bold green floral-print Valentino midi-length skirt. She accessorized the unlikely color palette with even more surprising but delightful picks: pale pink satin Valentino pumps and a sweet matching headband.

_

Allison Williams served up a confusing look on Academy Awards night on March 12. Though her Giambattista Valli frock started out so so strong — look at the pink and silver floral embroidery and the fun feather trim! — it took a strange turn with the pink opera coat she rocked on top of it… which obscured the pretty base of her long-sleeved gown.

_

In this dreamy blush-hued Miu Miu confection, Sydney Sweeney was one of our best dressed stars at the Met Gala on May 1. From the embellished straps to the fitted silhouette that exploded into a mermaid-style skirt complete with a train, we loved every inch of this look. But our favorite part had to be the oversized black bows that balanced things out — one at the knee of her gown and the other topping her stunning hairstyle.

_

Maren Morris’s gown left a lot to be desired at the Grammys on Feb. 5. The country darling turned up in this puzzling selection from Off-White, which included a sheer, long-sleeved, floor-length top layer complete with a plunging neckline so low that it fell below her navel.

_

Months ahead of the release of her film “Barbie,” Margot Robbie embraced pink with this Chantilly lace Chanel design at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10. We adored this one from the halter-style neckline down to the dreamy skirt.

_

Jennifer Lopez certainly stayed on theme at the premiere of her film “The Mother” in Los Angeles on May 10 — this look is matronly. Her puzzling Brunello Cucinelli ensemble was comprised of a floor-length coat and high-waisted skirt paired with a tiny bralette top all in the same beige shade. And while we appreciated the contrast between the sparse and ample fabric choices, we couldn’t get behind this odd combo.

_

This one looks like a work of art! Minnie Driver arrived at the premiere of “Chevalier” in Los Angeles on April 16 in this stunning pale blue pairing from Maticevski. The look was comprised of an artfully draped sleeveless top and a skirt complete with a bustled train detail and came straight from the designer’s Spring 2023 collection. We loved the pastel shade and the way she opted to pair it with a dark lip, adding a bit of edge.

_

A swing and a miss! Florence Pugh took a fashion risk on Academy Awards night on March 12 with this Valentino mess that didn’t pay off. The beige frock included dramatic off-the-shoulder ruffled sleeves that had a split up the center revealing… tiny black shorts?

_

Hailey Bieber opted for a black dress that was anything but boring when she donned this asymmetrical Saint Laurent piece with one floor-skimming sleeve. The model rocked the slinky and unique pick, which included a sheer cape-like detail, at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Los Angeles on March 12.

_

Heidi Klum channeled Big Bird in this wild yellow Georges Hobeika gown at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in West Hollywood on March 12. The model’s busy (and intimidating!) frock included a sheer skirt with a massive split that added even more chaos to the mix.

_

We weren’t fans of Jenna Ortega’s brown Gucci pick at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10. The young star’s haphazard dress included cutouts, draping, asymmetrical hemlines, billowy sleeves and a dramatic train — it was trying to accomplish too many things at once.

_

Those ruffles! That velvet! We adored the Louis Vuitton confection Ana de Armas wore to the BAFTA Awards on Feb. 19. Tiny spaghetti straps held up this one, which included a sweet ruffled bodice and a fitted silhouette.

_

It’s giving… toddler-inspired couture? Harry Styles rocked this wild and wacky tank-style checkerboard jumpsuit at the Grammys on Feb. 5 — a custom piece that was the fruit of an EGONLAB and Swarovski collaboration. While it brought a dose of fun, it wasn’t the right move for music’s biggest night.

_

Hilary Duff made us miss the Christmas season with this look. The star was spotted leaving ABC’s “Good Morning America” studios in New York City on Jan. 23 in this cheery cherry red ensemble — a skirt with some sweet pleats and a button-down blouse.

_

It was about six months too early for Halloween when Dascha Polanco arrived at Variety’s Power of Women event in New York City on April 4 in this mummy-like getup by Hanifa that reminded us of a costume.
