Why Prince Harry Surprised Meghan Markle With a New Engagement Ring

Bling bling. If you didn’t already know, here’s a reminder: It’s nice to be Meghan Markle. Not only is she married to a gem of a prince (I couldn’t help myself!), but she’s also spoiled with royal jewelry. Last year, Meghan debuted a new engagement ring but we had no idea why. Well, it turns out that Prince Harry wanted to surprise his new bride with an upgraded version and a band with a very special meaning.

Harry proposed in 2017, and over a year later Meghan was spotted with a new and improved ring. The yellow gold band was changed to a diamond-studded band. Harry had it reworked and gave his bride a bespoke eternity ring as a gift for their first wedding anniversary.

“On May 19, 2019, Harry also surprised his wife of one year with the gift of a ring that he had created with jeweller-to-the-stars Lorraine Schwartz, a favourite of Meghan’s,” authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write in Finding Freedom. “The conflict-free diamond eternity band paid homage to the family of three with Meghan’s, Archie’s and Harry’s birthstones (peridot, emerald, and sapphire, respectively) on the underside of the ring.” Ugh, so sweet.

The jeweler explained that Harry wanted to make the eternity ring “special” and that he’s “so romantic” and “so thoughtful” that way. Tell us something we don’t know! Meghan’s engagement ring has three diamonds: One large diamond in the middle and two smaller jewels on the sides.

After they announced their engagement, Harry told the BBC: “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewellery collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
