Why Bethenny Frankel feels guilty about Dennis Shields’ death

Bethenny Frankel wanted out of her relationship with Dennis Shields, but she didn’t know how to leave.

“He had such a powerful force in my life and my daughter loved it, that it was like this whole thing that was hard to extricate myself from,” Frankel recalled to a grief counselor on Wednesday’s episode of “Real Housewives of New York City.”

After Shields was found dead of a suspected drug overdose, the Skinnygirl mogul wondered if she should blame herself.

“There was a lot in my mind about him dying right after that. I could not get off the ride. I feel guilty that the only way I got off the ride is that he’s dead,” she said, wiping away tears. “I hope I didn’t have anything to do with him dying.”

Despite feeling immense grief, 48-year-old Frankel admitted she also felt relieved after Shields died. The conflicting emotions ultimately made her feel worse in the aftermath.

“I feel better and I feel guilty that I feel better,” she explained. “Although I really loved him, my relationship with Dennis was not a healthy one. But losing someone I really depended on like a brother, a father, a friend, a lover — it’s not fair. That’s the one category that I really need to be filled. Whether we were going to end up together, romantically or not, he was still my person.”

Frankel and Shields began dating in 2016, though they had met 20 years prior when they were in high school. He proposed to the Bravolebrity last April, though they kept it under wraps. She did, however, proudly wear a massive diamond ring, though she never confirmed they were to be married until after he passed away.

She has since moved on, finding love with real estate developer Paul Bernon.
