The internet is in love with this video of Jane Fonda accepting a BAFTA award while being arrested
Jane Fonda accepted her latest BAFTA award in handcuffs, and the internet is in love with the video evidence.
Jane Fonda may have been absent from the audience when she was announced as the winner of the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award at the BAFTA Britannia Awards in Los Angeles on Friday, but she still managed to steal the show.
The actor, who was protesting in Washington on the day of the awards ceremony, submitted an acceptance video in which she is being arrested by police – and it’s just as amazing as it sounds.
In a video uploaded online over the weekend, the actor can be seen talking to the camera over the shoulders of fellow protesters and police as she is placed in handcuffs.
“BAFTA, thank you!” she shouts over the shoulders of other protesters being arrested.
“Thank you for the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. Thank you! I’m sorry I’m not there!” she continues, lifting up her wrists to show her hands in handcuffs.
“I’m very honoured!”
Fonda was arrested during the latest of her climate crisis protests in Washington DC, where she moved earlier this year to engage in the weekly protests she has called “Fire Drill Fridays”.
As is to be expected, the unique acceptance speech attracted a standing ovation from the audience in Los Angeles, and has gained a lot of support and love from people on Twitter.
“Right that’s it,” one response read. “The best ‘I’m sorry I can’t be there” acceptance speech of all time.”
“Jane Fonda is an actual baddie,” added another.
Fonda was pictured alongside fellow actor Ted Danson at the protest on Friday, where she spoke about being inspired to act by young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
“I’m inspired by Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish student,” she told the crowd at the protest on Friday.
“[Thunberg] said we have to behave like our house is on fire, because it is,” she continued. “And that’s why we’re calling these ‘Fire drill Fridays’.”
This isn’t the first time the actor has spoken about Thunberg. In an interview with The Los Angeles Times at the beginning of the month, Fonda said the teenager’s actions were particularly moving to her.
“She [Thunberg] read the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report and she realised that the crisis was barrelling straight at us, like a train, and looked around and people weren’t behaving appropriately,” Fonda explained. “It so traumatised her that she stopped eating. I hadn’t realised that she stopped eating and speaking for almost a year. And that really hit me.”
Fonda was first arrested for protesting on the 11 October, and has since said she intends to protest every week until January to demand action on the climate crisis. The actor moved to Washington DC earlier this year to make it easier for her to attend the protests.
