Steph McGovern, 30, has hit back at a video from Gemma O’Doherty on Twitter, after she claimed gay people are “unhappy” and lead “promiscuous lifestyles”. The former BBC Breakfast host, who is dating a woman with whom she has a young daughter, was justifiably left angered by the controversial remarks.
Look at my unhappy life with my amazing partner!
In the video shared on Twitter, Gemma stated: “I don’t see anyone, or know anyone who is gay, who is happy.
“I just don’t. It’s a miserable lifestyle, it’s a promiscuous lifestyle. It’s a dark lifestyle,” she added.
Steph shared the video in view of her 412,700 followers and sarcastically quipped: “I can so relate to this…..
“I mean look at my unhappy life with my amazing partner, our gorgeous daughter, our cracking friends, our wonderful family and our brilliant jobs.
“Awful life Gemma. Awful.”
Mounting anger arose over the video in response to Steph’s comment, as some asked if people were only miserable when they were around Gemma.
One typed: “She’s surrounded by lots of miserable gay people? Or people around her are miserable?”
Another replied: “Being around Gemma would be enough to make ANYONE miserable if these kind of videos are anything to go by.”
A third commented: “I know loads of people who are gay and are living the happiest life. Pity Gemma wouldn’t learn to live and let live.”
Gemma began her career as a staff writer for the Irish Independent before leaving in 2014 and since then, she has released a number of videos on YouTube and was banned in July 2019 after violating their policies on hate speech.
It comes as Steph revealed she was not with her mystery partner for long before they decided to start a family.
The Steph’s Packed Lunch host had been planning to have a child solo, before starting a romantic relationship with a long-term friend whose name she prefers to keep out of the spotlight.

Seeking an expert opinion, the TV host visited a clinic to check on her ability to have children, fearing menopause.
Offering advice to women who are considering having a baby, Steph shared: “I say to everyone who’s thinking vaguely about having a baby, I say, ‘Just go and see what the level of play is with your eggs is, if you can’.
“If you’re on your own just go and see,” she added on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby.
However, thankfully her fertility was not a worry for too long, as she quickly conceived.
She continued: “Then me and my partner got together, and we had been friends for a long, long time before we got together.
“So she knew all about this, that I was thinking about what to do, and then we got together and she was like, ‘Shall we just go for it?’
“We hadn’t even been together that long. I was like, ‘Do you reckon?’ And she was like, ‘What’s stopping us?’ We decided we would have a baby.”
Steph gave birth to a baby daughter at the end of 2019 when she was still working at BBC Breakfast.
Giovanna asked if it was “hard” deciding who out of Steph and her partner would carry the child.
Steph responded: “No, no, it was always going to be me. In fact, it’s funny because that was the bit I didn’t want to do. I thought, ‘Ah I’m actually not fussed about being pregnant’.”
