‘Star Wars’ Actress Daisy Ridley Slammed for Comparing Her Privileged Upbringing to John Boyega’s

The Rey depicter denies that she was more privileged than her co-star, who was raised by immigrant parents, despite the fact that she attended a boarding school in London.

AceShowbizDaisy Ridley has come under fire after comparing her London upbringing to that of her “Star Wars” co-star John Boyega. In an interview with The Guardian, the British actress was asked if she’d found it “easier to be confident and navigate her celebrity [status] because of the privilege in her life.”

The 27-year-old star denied that she’s more privileged than John, who grew up in Peckham as the son of Nigerian immigrant parents, despite the fact that she was raised in London’s affluent Maida Vale neighborhood and attended a boarding school. “The privilege I have – how? No, genuinely, how?” she responded to the question.

Insisting that her childhood was not so different from John’s, she added, “John grew up on a council estate in Peckham and I think me and him are similar enough that … no.” She admitted though that she went to a performing arts boarding school, which she described as “different.” Her publicist additionally told the newspaper that Daisy went to the school on a scholarship.

Following her comments that compared her privileged upbringing to John’s, people took to Twitter to slam the Rey depicter. Some people branded her “tone deaf ” and “detached from reality,” with entertainment blogger Perez Hilton attacking her character, “Daisy Ridley seems…. kinda insufferable. The way she talks about her privilege. The way she talks to her boyfriend and friends.”

Another Twitter user wrote, “Really can’t believe that Daisy Ridley had the audacity and nerve to compare her privately educated, rich, privileged life as a member of a family who’s part of the establishment as similar to Boyega’s experiences as someone who grew up in a deprived area to immigrant parents.”

“growing up privileged isn’t one’s fault but choosing not to acknowledge it is and daisy ridley shows it perfectly,” another pointed out. Someone else called her out, “Daisy Ridley really seems to think that she – a white woman born into immense privilege with a well-connected family in the entertainment biz – has ‘about the same’ privilege as John Boyega – a black man with Nigerian parents who grew up in Peckham. Unbelievable.”

Daisy and John starred together in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017), and will reprise their roles as Rey and Finn respectively in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker“.

Daisy comes from a showbiz family, with her grandfather being head of engineering at BBC from 1950 to 1965 and his brother being “Dad’s Army” actor and playwright Arnold Ridley.
