Shane Gillis Shows Little Remorse for His Racist Comments

Shane Gillis returned to stand-up comedy after recently being fired from Saturday Night Live for his past racist comments. While Gillis issued two statements about the controversy, he did not issue an official apology. In his recent stand-up set, Gillis made even more comments about Asians. On social media, people expressed their displeasure that Gillis does not show any remorse for the racist comments he made.

‘Saturday Night Live’ fired Shane Gillis four days after hiring him

In his podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, Gillis mocked Asian immigrants in New York City’s Chinatown by saying “Let the f*cking ch*nks live there.” People then found more racist and homophobic comments by Gillis online. After the controversy surrounding Gillis’ racist remarks broke online, Gillis issued a statement on Twitter.

“I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss,” he said in the statement. “I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said.”

SNL made the decision to fire Gillis four days after hiring him. The show apologized for not vetting Gillis properly. Gillis then issued another statement on Twitter. In the statement, Gillis referenced his racist comments as a “distraction.”

“I’m a comedian who was funny enough to get on SNL. That can’t be taken away,” he said. “Of course, I wanted an opportunity to prove myself at SNL but it would be too much of a distraction.”

Shane Gillis joked about Asians again in his recent comedy set

In his recent comedy act in New York City, Gillis talked to the audience about his recent firing. He also discussed what it was like to have people across the country dislike him. According to USA Today, Gillis made even more comments about Asians.

“‘I’m fine with the consequences — that’s it, I’m not arguing. But I do want everyone to know that I have been reading every one of my death threats in an Asian accent,’” Gillis reportedly said in the act.

Gillis also joked about racism in the set.

“It’s funny to hear so many people these days say, ‘I’m not racist,’ It’s like, are you sure? Being racist isn’t like a yes or no thing. It’s not like you do or you don’t have it,” Gillis said. “Being racist is like being hungry: It’s like, ‘Yeah, you’re not right now, but a cheeseburger could cut you off in traffic and you could get hungry real quick. You didn’t even know you were hungry for that type of cheeseburger.’ The cheeseburger is not Asian in that joke.”

Twitter users were not happy about Shane Gillis’ lack of remorse over his racist comments

After the contents of Gillis’ stand-up act spread online, social media users voiced their dislike about the comedian’s jokes.

“To all the people defending him & crying you can’t have comedy in this PC culture— his intent was never comedy. He’s obsessed with mocking Asian people. Time to hold a funeral for his career as a ‘funny person,’” wrote a Twitter user.

“Glad to see that this experience has been humbling and educational,” a Twitter user joked.

“Why is this guy obsessed with Asian people,” another asked.

J. Kenji López-Alt tweeted, “‘I’m cool being fired because it turns out that I really am a racist who will learn nothing from this and instead double down on my racism because being racist is better than admitting you were wrong.’”
