Ryan Gosling joins Margot Robbie on Barbie set playing Ken

EXCLUSIVE: Barbie meets Ken! Ryan Gosling joins Margot Robbie on set for first time as they get dolled up in matching cowboy hats and pink neckerchiefs in LA

Ryan Gosling joined Margot Robbie on the Los Angeles set of their new movie Barbie on Tuesday, as he was seen filming in character as her counterpart Ken for the very first time.

The Oscar-nominated actor showed off his movie star good looks wearing a classic Western-style shirt complete with embroidered flowers, fringe edging and pearl snap fasteners.

Both Ryan, 41, and his co-star Margot, 31, wore matching white cowboy hats and pink neckerchiefs as they played their respective roles while being directed by Greta Gerwig on location.

The Notebook star completed his all-black cowboy look with a pair of white leather boots as he stood outside with the Australian actress to film a scene for the hotly-anticipated new project.

Little Women and Lady Bird director Greta, 38, also appeared to be getting into the Barbie spirit as she was seen wearing a pastel-pink boiler suit with matching headphones.

Although Margot and Ryan are being billed as the lead stars, it has been rumoured that there will be different versions of Barbie and Ken, with one Barbie said to be portrayed by Issa Rae and the other might be Hari Nef.

Marvel’s Simu Liu and new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa are also said be playing other Kens.

New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan tweeted: ‘I am hearing incredible BARBIE goss at Cannes. For one, I’m hearing that Ryan Gosling is not the only Ken in the BARBIE film. Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa also play Ken.

‘And, by the same token, Margot Robbie is not the film’s only Barbie. Issa Rae and Hari Nef play different Barbies…’

Other members of the cast include Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, America Ferrara, Rhea Perlman, Ariana Greenblatt, Ana Cruz Kayne, Alexandra Shipp, Ritu Arya, Sharon Rooney, Connor Swindells, Scott Evans and Jamie Demetriou.

Fans think Emma will be playing the role of Skipper, the younger sister of Barbie, thanks to her resemblance to Margot.

Not such a serious note: The role of Ken certainly appears to be somewhat of a left turn for the Oscar-nominated thespian

Also linked to the film are Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan, actress Saoirse Ronan and pop sensation Dua Lipa – but these have not yet been confirmed.

The Derry Girls actress teased that Sex Education’s Ncuti had already been announced for the mystery project, but she had not yet.

And Ncuti appeared to hint that their joint project is the upcoming Barbie film as he shared a snap of the pair to Instagram alongside the caption, ‘a pair of dolls’.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but insiders have suggested that there is a meta aspect to the story.

Will Ferrell is said to be playing the CEO of a toy company that may or may not be Mattel.

The first official image of Ryan showed the actor dressed as the ‘Earring Magic Ken’ version of the doll introduced by Mattel in 1993, as a companion to its ‘Earring Magic Barbie’ figure.

This particular version of the Ken doll featured an updated look with the character sporting blonde highlights, instead of his traditional brown hair.

Interesting choice: Director Greta Gerwig (pictured above) is known for her indie work with films such as Lady Bird

Making a difference: The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star is hoping to provoke ‘thoughtful conversation’ with the film

Sashay away: Production on the quirky new film is now well underway, but fans will have to wait until next year to see it

The doll also featured a lavender mesh shirt, a purple leather jacket and jewelry including an earring and a necklace.

Upon release, it became the highest-selling Ken doll in history and caused a stir when some people speculated that designers had taken inspiration from the gay clubbing scene in early nineties New York and Los Angeles.

Ryan is known for his serious acting work in acclaimed films such as Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and Half Nelson.

First looks: The studio previously revealed these stills of Ryan and Margot in character

Sporting a cheesy grin and white underwear branded with his character’s name, the role of Ken certainly appears to be somewhat of a left turn for the thespian.

Meanwhile, Margot has long been attached to play Barbie on the big screen and promised that the movie will be very different to what people are expecting.

She said: ‘Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is’, but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star is hoping to provoke ‘thoughtful conversation’ with the film.
