Holly Willoughby has been busy celebrating her 40th birthday with her This Morning colleagues today and her co-host Phillip Schofield even threw her a huge surprise in the studios before filming the hit show together.

Ahead of filming his best friend’s emotional reaction to all the balloons and her decorated dressing room, Phillip, 58, shared his best wishes to Holly exclusively with OK! magazine, saying she is "the sister he never had".

“There have been so many times over the years that I have rejoiced in the fact that Holly is my friend, I’ve said often that she is the sister I never had,” he said.

“We’ve stood side by side (recently with a 2m gap) through good times and tough times.”

Phillip went on to add more about their friendship, after they were first paired together as a presenting duo back in 2006 to host Dancing on Ice.

“She is a constant support to me, built of steel and love. We’ve laughed together and cried together and got helplessly drunk together," he continued.

“I’m a lucky man to have such a fiercely loyal and wonderful friend in my life. Happy birthday Holly x.”

It comes after the blonde beauty was overwhelmed with emotion as she saw her colleagues standing in the corridor cheering her on when she arrived at work in the early hours.

Tearing up with her face mask on, Holly passed her work pals and towards Phillip before entering the dressing room.

“Oh my God, thank you, thank you. I’m just going to go in here and cry," she stated.

Holly then asked her pal Phil: “I’m going to spend all day in tears, aren’t I?”

Making her day that little bit more special, Holly decided to wear the same dress her mum wore on her 40th birthday to host the programme.

She explained more about her dress by sharing an image of her mum and herself wearing the same floral dress on Instagram.

“This photo of my Mum was taken on her 40th birthday at the party she had in the garden,” she told her seven million followers.

“I remember this day so clearly. It's a strange thing to reach the age you remember your Mum being! I asked her if she'd kept the dress and of course she had… Strange moment zipping it up this morning, wondering how she felt on her big day…

"I can't be with my Mum or Dad today but wearing this in her honour makes me feel closer to them… love you Mumma!”
