N.Y. Lawmaker Introduces Bill To Ban Virginity Tests After T.I. Comments

Rapper T.I.‘s remarks that he takes his daughter to the gynecologist every year to “check her hymen” and make sure it’s “still intact” has prompted New York Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages to introduce legislation to ban so-called virginity testing.

The lawmaker said Tuesday the bill she introduced in the Assembly last month would prohibit a hymen or two-finger examination, which is painful.

“Deyjah’s 18, just graduated high school now and she’s attending her first year of college, figuring it out for herself. And yes, not only have we had the conversation, we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen,” T.I. said in a podcast interview that aired in November.

T.I.’s comments were met with significant criticism on social media.

“T.I. used his platform, whether he was serious or sarcastic, to state all in all that women are property and you have to maintain your property is in good standing,” said Solages, a Democratic member of the Assembly Health Committee.
