Miley Cyrus Said Liam Hemsworth Was the First Guy She "Went All the Way With"

It’s true, Miley Cyrus knows her way around a breakup anthem, but the singer’s latest is no mournful “Wrecking Ball.” Cyrus’s new single “Midnight Sky,” which conveniently dropped hours after news of her split from Cody Simpson made the media rounds, addresses the 27-year-old’s newfound independence.

“Yeah, it's been a long night and the mirror's telling me to go home. But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own,” she sings on the track. The verse is followed by a telling line that appears to be an allusion to Cyrus’s ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth: “Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes. Forever and ever, no more.” Fans proceeded accordingly:

“I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no. I don't need to be loved by you,” the chorus continues.

Cyrus opened up about the song and her forthcoming album on Apple Music, explaining that she "felt like my story and my narrative had kind of been told for me over the past year" and that she's working to share her own perspective. "I felt kind of villainized," she went on. "I also felt like I kind of shut down, because it was kind of, respectfully, below me to engage with the press and the media at that time. It felt like I would rather be able to articulate this experience in a poetic way that also I can put back into my art."

On Thursday, just before “Midnight Sky”’s release, an episode of Barstool Sports’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast featuring Cyrus dropped. During the hour-long conversation with host Alex Cooper, Cyrus got candid about her sexual relationships. “I was attracted to girls way before I was attracted to guys,” she said. “The first time I ever hooked up with anyone was with a girl — two of them. I didn’t go all the way with a dude [until] I was 16. I ended up marrying the guy.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth were together (and apart, and together again) for an entire decade, beginning when the pair shot The Last Song in 2009. They wed just ahead of Christmas in 2018 and split in August after just eight months of marriage.
