Michaela Coel honored – and challenged – writers everywhere in perhaps one of the most memorable speeches of the night at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The 33-year-old actress and writer won Outstanding Writing for a Television Limited Anthology Series or Movie on Sunday night for her hit HBO series I May Destroy You.

Coel, who both created the series and plays the lead character Arabella, delivered a poignant speech on stage, while dedicating the award to sexual assault survivors.

Coel is a sexual assault survivor herself, with her experiences serving as the basis of her show I May Destroy You.

Coel beat out Laura Donney (WandaVision), Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit), Chuck Hayward and Peter Cameron (WandaVision), Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) and Jac Schaeffer (WandaVision) for the award.

She took to the stage wearing a two-piece yellow Christopher John Rodgers gown, when she delivered the speech aimed at writers everywhere.

‘Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable. I dare you,’ she began.

‘In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success — do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence,’ she added.

She concluded her speech by stating, ‘I dedicate this to every single survivor of sexual assault.’

Coel was also nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Lead Actress for Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

The ceremony is Coel’s first Emmy Awards appearance, with the actress and writer telling E! Online that she is ‘overwhelmed with gratitude’ to be at the Emmys.

‘If I think about it too much, I get emotional. I means a lot to be heard and listened to so attentively. I’m very grateful,’ she added.

She also added it was ‘incredible’ and meaningful to be nominated with Paapa Essiedu at her side.

Essiedu is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his portrayal of Kwame on the show. 

Coel also has a mystery role in Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated superhero sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
