Megyn Kelly praises Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry for ‘sounding the alarm’ on Matt Lauer
Megyn Kelly has praised former NBC stars Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry for “sounding the alarm” on their disgraced “Today” co-star Matt Lauer.
Kelly — sacked by NBC chiefs in 2018 over comments she made about blackface — previously made it clear that she knew all about Lauer’s reprehensible behavior with women in the workplace.
After a torrid week at NBC, where bosses were hit by claims that Lauer raped Vieira’s former assistant Brooke Nevils, Kelly, who left with her $69 million contract intact, told Page Six exclusively: “Let’s not lose sight of the forces for good in this story, like former Lauer co-host Ann Curry, who, despite the risks, sounded the alarm on Lauer in 2012 after a young woman complained to her, and Meredith Vieira, who, when confronted with Brooke Nevils’ account, told her to go report it.”
Kelly, who spoke out about the harassment she endured while employed by former Fox boss Roger Ailes, devoted her brief stint on “Today” to talking to survivors of abuse and discussing the #MeToo movement.
Shortly after NBC fired Lauer in November 2018 for “sexual misconduct”, Kelly brought former “Today” production assistant Addie Zinone on air to talk about her alleged sexual affair with Lauer.
Asked if that irked NBC bigwigs, Kelly told Us Weekly at the time: “All I’m going to say is that I feel very strongly about the #MeToo coverage, the importance of doing it without fear or favor.” When asked to comment about Lauer’s future on TV after his firing, she declined to comment, saying only: “I know too much that others don’t know.”
Despite the furor over Kelly’s acrimonious exit, following her departure, Ad Age reported that from September 2017 through August 2018, “Megyn Kelly Today” pulled $118 million in ad revenue, according to Kantar Media. That was a 20 percent increase from the $99 million the “Today” show garnered in the 9 a.m. hour the year earlier.
Curry, who infamously broke down in tears on the day of her “Today” exit in 2012 — which many said was engineered by Lauer — has insisted she told NBC chiefs they had a Lauer problem after an NBC employee complained to her.
However, she’s never named the execs she spoke to, prompting NBC News president Noah Oppenheim to hit back on Monday, saying: “By her own account, Curry relayed no specific complaint, nor did she say Lauer’s ‘problem’ regarded any specific workplace misconduct.
“NBCU was able to speak with one of those former executives during the 2018 review and she denied having been told even this. At the time of the employee’s exit, three years later, she still had made no complaint about Lauer, was paid 22 weeks of severance based on her years of service and was asked to sign a separation agreement that was standard for departing employees at the time. The standard separation agreement included a routine confidentiality clause that was designed to protect proprietary company information. It was not drafted to prevent an employee from reporting misconduct, and it has never been used that way. (This employee made a complaint to management about Lauer, for the first time, after his 2017 firing.)”
As for Kelly, we’re told that she is in talks with media outlets about a return to TV ahead of the election.
