Jennifer Lopez considered stripping before her career took off
Jennifer Lopez’s Golden Globe-nominated performance in 2019 hit “Hustlers” found the actress portraying a stripper, an occupation the Bronx native considered herself, according to a new interview with W Magazine.
While discussing her critically-acclaimed turn as Ramona Vega in the flick, Lopez, 50, revealed that she once considered taking it off for cash as an aspiring dancer.
“I did. There was a moment in my life when my friends, who were also dancers, told me about making thousands of dollars at clubs in New Jersey,” J. Lo, 50, revealed when asked if she ever considered hitting the pole. “They said, ‘You won’t need to be topless.’ It sounded awfully good when I was broke and eating pizza every day, but I never did it.”
Lopez went on to land her first major dance gig as a Fly Girl on 1990s sketch-comedy series “In Living Color.” She soon pivoted into acting, with memorable roles in fan favorites such as “Anaconda,” “Selena” and a number of romantic comedies. With “Hustlers” however, Jenny from the block was able to explore another side of herself as an actress.
“I was a little nervous about doing this movie because I had never played someone this dark or complicated. I liked that Ramona, the character I play, and the other strippers were looked at as equals to their patrons, the guys on Wall Street.”
She went on, “Ramona reminded me of that girlfriend we all have who is exciting but can also get you into trouble. You always miss that friend when she’s gone, but when you get together, you worry you might find yourself in some crazy situation. That’s Ramona.”
