James Martin, 48, has opened up about his exit from Saturday Kitchen, explaining how he “had to slow down” after witnessing someone die. In an unearthed interview, the presenter revealed how this impacted him and made him reassess his priorities.

James is well-known to viewers as the host of James Martin’s Saturday Morning on ITV.

However, many will also remember how the star used to be one of the presenters on Saturday Kitchen before he left in 2016.

Speaking about the reasons behind this, James opened up about witnessing a tragic death.

In an unearthed interview, the celebrity chef explained how this impacted him.

He said: “I was in Dubai for a food festival about six months before I left Saturday Kitchen.

“There were 2,000 people in the room. I sat talking to this wonderful guy, same age as me, same kind of story about starting from nothing, only he’d gone to Dubai and set up one of the biggest publishing houses in the Emirates.

“He stood up to introduce the show, but while he was on stage, that was it.

“I saw him blackout, hit the deck. Heart attack. He’d gone before he hit the floor.”

The chef admitted how this changed his priorities in a chat to the Irish Mail on Sunday back in 2018.

He added: “I remember walking out and saying, ‘What’s it all for?’ Just like that, you’re gone. It happens to a lot of people.”

After this, James left Saturday Kitchen and soon struggled with his own health problems.

He had to have operations shortly after and explained how he wasn’t very well at the time.

James continued: “When I left Saturday Kitchen I didn’t have anything planned, I just knew I had to slow down.

“I had to do something or something was going to break.

“And then, before I could slow down, I was in hospital and I was having operations.”

Luckily it seems James is back fighting fit now as he returns to screens for another edition of James Martin’s Saturday Morning.

The show sees him cooking up a storm as he chats with celebrity guests every week.

Recently, he opened up about how thankful he was to his fans for their support of the show.

He posted a few pictures of him presenting to his 637,000 Instagram followers back in March.

Alongside this, he penned: “Just a message to you all to say thank you for watching and supporting me over the years.

“This weekend is 5 years since I changed direction and left my old show …yes, 5 years!

“It’s also 28 years next week…yes, 28 years…since I hit the small screens with a bandana.

“Thank you for everything and for all your support, have a wonderful weekend all, big love.”
