How Chris Farley's Famous Friends Honored Him on 21st Anniversary of His Tragic Death
Adam Sandler, David Spade, Stephen Colbert and Chris Rock honor their friend who died too soon.
Chris Farley was on a lot of famous comedians’ minds on Tuesday, and some of their thoughts on the 21st anniversary of the comedy icon’s death had us on the verge of tears.
Although most people don’t typically associate Stephen Colbert with Farley, the "Late Show" host took to Twitter to reveal they had a very close connection: Second City improv in Chicago.
"Chris Farley and I started at Second City on the same day. You knew the minute you saw him on stage he was great," Colbert wrote. "He was sweet and smart and funny. When I heard he had died, 21 years ago today, I fell to the ground. Rest In Peace."
Adam Sandler, who of course was on "Saturday Night Live" with Farley in the ’90s, tweeted, "We all miss you, bud," and resurfaced a tribute song he sang for his fallen friend during his recent Netflix special, "100% Fresh."
"He was a one-man party," Sandler sang of Farley, and went on to reference his former colleague’s most famous "SNL" sketches: the Gap Girls, "Van Down by the River," Chippendales, the Super Fans and the Lunch Lady.
The song isn’t particularly funny, but it’s not supposed to be. Instead Sandler gives rare insight into the man behind the laughs.
"After a show he’d drink a court of Jack Daniels, then stick the bottle right up his ass. But hungover as hell that Catholic boy always showed up to morning mass," he sang. "We’d tell him, ‘Slow down you’ll end up like Belushi and Candy.’ He said, ‘Those guys are my heroes, that’s all fine and dandy.’ I ain’t making that shit up, that’s truth about my boy Chris Farley."
Sandler makes it clear that Farley was the funniest guy of their crew on screen and off, singing that he made them laugh all night long that last time they hung out — Tim Meadow’s wedding — before they buried him several months later after he died from a drug overdose on December 18, 1997 at just 33.
"I miss hanging out watching you try to get laid, but most of all I miss watching you f–k with [David] Spade," he sang. "You’re a legend like you wanted but I still wish you were here with me and we were getting on a plane to go shoot ‘Grown Ups 3.’"
Speaking of David Spade, he had something to share, too — a blooper reel from "Tommy Boy," one of two classic comedies the pair headlined together. After the success of "Tommy Boy," they starred in "Black Sheep" together. Before that, they both appeared in the "Coneheads" movie.
"21 years ago one of the greats died," Spade tweeted with the "Tommy Boy" gag compilation.
