Golden Globe nominations 2019: Olivia Colman, Emily Blunt and Claire Foy bag prestigious nods as British actors, movies and TV dramas sweep the board
- British actors, movies and TV series swept the board as the Golden Globe 2018 nominations were announced on Thursday
- The Favourite, a black comedy set in the court of Queen Anne, lead the way scooping five nominations and is expected to do well at the ceremony

Olivia Colman, Claire Foy and Emily Blunt are just three of the British talents who received Golden Globe nominations on Thursday.
Brits swept the board as the nods were announced in Los Angeles, with nominations for big screen features such as The Favourite and small screen triumphs including the Hugh Grant-starring A Very English Scandal and Killing Eve.
Historical period comedy The Favourite is one of the front runners at this year’s awards, with the British flick receiving five different nominations, tying it with A Star Is Born and Green Book, whilst Vice takes the lead with six separate nods.

Olivia and Emily will compete against Constance Wu for the smash hit Crazy Rich Asians, Charlize Theron in Tully and Elsie Fisher in Eighth Grade.
The nomination marks Olivia’s first Golden Globe film, nod having scooped a gong in 2017 for TV drama The Night Manager. The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, sees the acclaimed Brit take on the role of Queen Anne.

The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns are also both up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. They will take on Crazy Rich Asians, Green Book and Vice as they hope to scoop the prize.
Adding to it’s impressive list of nods, The Favourite will also compete for Best Screenplay in a Motion Picture, up against Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Vice and Green Book.
Rachel Wesiz, who stars as the Duchess of Marlborough in the comedy, is up for Best Supporting Actress, taking on fellow Brit Claire Foy, as well as Amy Adams, Regina King and Emma Stone.

Meanwhile, Mary Poppins Returns has another nod for Best Original Score in a Motion Picture, with composer Marc Shaiman taking on Marco Beltrami (A Quiet Place), Alexandre Desplat (Isle of Dogs), Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther) and Justin Hurwitz (First Man).
Another category dominated by the Brits this year is Best Drama Television Series, with the BBC’s Bodyguard and Killing Eve both receiving nods – taking on The Americans, Homecoming and Pose.
Killing Eve received the Best Drama nod and Sandra Oh (who will present this year’s ceremony) was also nominated.

Scottish actor Richard Madden though has been nominated for Best Actor in a Drama show owing to his work on Bodyguard – which was one of the Beeb’s most-watched series this year.
He will go head to head against Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, who was nominated for his work in the final series of The Americans, as well as Jason Bateman, Stephan James Scottish and Billy Porter.
Ben Whishaw will be at the ceremony in support of A Very English Scandal, which received a nomination for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Whishaw, has been reocognised for his stellar roles, competing for Best Supporting Actor in a Series with Alan Arkin, Kieran Culkin, Edgar Ramirez and Henry Winkler.
Meanwhile, his co-star Hugh Grant will compete for Best Actor in a Series alongside fellow Brit Benedict Cumberbatch – who has been recognised for his titular role in Patrick Melrose – and Daniel Brühl, Antonio Banderas and Darren Criss.
Thandie Newton has earned herself a nod in the female category of the award, with her work on BBC series Line Of Duty meaning she will take on Alex Bornstein, Patricia Clarkson, Penelope Cruz and Yvonne Strahovski for the Best Actress crown.

Another leading lady who will be hoping to walk away with a gong on the night is Rosamund Pike, who has earned herself a nod for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her work in A Private War.
She will compete against Glenn Close, Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy on the night.
Sacha Baron Cohen has earned his second Golden Globe nominations, 12 years on from Borat, for his latest project Who is America? which centered around pranking political figures and unsuspecting celebrities and civilians.

In the Best Motion Picture Drama category, Bohemian Rhapsody – a biographical film about the British rock band Queen that follows singer Freddie Mercury’s life – will compete against Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Streat Could Talk and A Star Is Born.
Vice – the Dick Cheney biopic – picked up the most nods this year, with English actor Christian Bale nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his leading role, which required a remarkable physical transformation.
The film has earned six nods overall, including acting nominations for Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell alongside Bale.
He will compete against Lin-Manuel Miranda, Viggo Mortensen, Robert Redford and John C. Reilly for the gong.

Meanwhile, Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me) is the British star hoping to take home Best Supporting Actor in any Motion Picture, competing against Mahershala Ali, Timothee Chalamet, Adam Driver and Sam Rockwell.
This year’s ceremony has been nothing short of surprises, with comic book fans sharing their delight that the acclaimed Black Panther received a nod for Best Picture – Drama.
And after receiving much acclaim for its diverse cast, Crazy Rich Asians also earned a surprise nod for Best Picture – Musical Or Comedy.

Not every film actor made the cut, however, with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill out of the running for Netflix’s Maniac.
Also snubbed was This Is Us, one of the few broadcast network shows that has garnered awards respect amid an onslaught of cable and streaming shows. It failed to earn a best drama series bid or recognition for last year’s Globes (and previous Emmy Award) winner Sterling K Brown or the twice-nominated Chrissy Metz.
Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale the defending best drama series winner, was overlooked this time, a sting that follows its loss in this year’s Emmys to Game of Thrones. But Handmaid’s star Elisabeth Moss and co-star Yvonne Strahovski were nominated.

Sadly Thrones missed out on 2019 Globes consideration because new episodes didn’t air within the eligibility window, as the final season was delayed to air in April of next year.
Instead The Americans has been strongly recognised following it’s final season, along with FX’s Pose, set in 1980s New York and with a groundbreaking number of transgender cast members.
Donald Glover’s Atlanta was ignored again for Best Comedy Series though star Glover, who won for his role in 2017, was again nominated.
His competitors include Jim Carrey for Showtime’s Kidding, Michael Douglas for Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and Bill Hader, fresh off an Emmy win for Barry.
Henry Winkler, who claimed an Emmy for his supporting role in HBO’s Barry, is also up for a Globe. It would be his third after winning twice for his iconic role in Happy Days in 1977 and 1978.
The series itself is also competing for top comedy honours against defending Globes champ and Emmy winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Issa Rae, a two-time nominee for Insecure, missed out on a Best Comedy Actress nom, but Candice Bergen got a welcome-back hug for CBS’ revived sitcom Murphy Brown.
She was a Globes favorite when the original series aired, earning nine nominations and winning in 1989.
Bergen is part of an all-white field of nominees, including Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan for Mrs. Maisel.
Glover is the only black actor in his category, though actors Billy Porter (Pose) and Stephan James (Homecoming) did earn drama nods for their respective performances.
Nominations for FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story included Best limited series or TV movie, and nominations for stars Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez.
The series of course dominated the Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this year, with three wins including Best Actor for Glee star Criss.

Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slater took turns listing this year’s nominees on Thursday during a live broadcast at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
They were accompanied by Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Meher Tatna and Golden Globe Ambassador Isan Elba.
The announcements were made one month before the 76th annual Golden Globe ceremony, which will be hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh on January 6.
