Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway clashed with former Health Secretary Edwina Currie over PCR test costs during travel abroad.

Things became heated during an interview on the latest instalment of the ITV news programme, as the 54 year old host admitted she’d struggled to book holidays abroad and in the UK.

Kate had been keen to book a trip abroad with her children Darcey and Billy, but the high test costs and finding the time to do them was a strain.

“You just have a horrible feeling that someone is making money out of this unfairly,” the presenter said on the programme.

Hearing the journalist’s woes though, Edwina suggested she simply take the children “on holiday” in the UK instead.

“Kate, bring the kids up to the Peak District, you’ll have a lovely time, you’ll be very very welcome,” the MP said.

Angry over the implication, the presenter fired back: “Well, since you made it personal, it’s not necessarily about that, but I’ve been trying to book a holiday in the UK and have not been able to find something suitable because I have particular needs and I can talk about that another time.

“But actually your point doesn’t help the travel industry. The whole point of the PCR tests and getting things going is to encourage people to travel safely, not being at risk, this is what the government said.

“I’m very keen to travel abroad but this is because of a very specific reason where I need to travel,” Kate added.

The former health secretary insisted there were “lots of people” with special needs travelling for breaks in all parts of the UK, and she refuted the idea that you “have to pay for these tests in order to go on holiday”.

A PCR test – a polymerase chain reaction test – is a test that detects the presence of a virus if you are infected at the time of taking it.

The UK is the second most expensive country in the world right now for a test, with an average cost of £92 and some even reaching the price of £400.

A test in France costs just £42 in comparison, while in Turkey it’s as low as £21.

After declaring she hadn’t even said her upcoming trip is “a holiday” to the politician, Kate finished her thoughts on the subject by pointing out that the need to travel is a mental health issue for many people.

She also argued that companies are profiting excessively in the pandemic.

“There’s something about it that feels wrong,” the presenter added.

During the discussion, the presenter revealed that the Department of Health have requested urgent advice from The Competition and Markets Authority on PCR tests.
