Virgin Radio DJ Chris Evans, 54, had to apologise on behalf of Dame Esther Rantzen, 80, after she said “b******s” twice during an interview with the presenter on his Breakfast Show today. The former That’s Life! host began by apologising for saying the word “bum” on-air when she made a mistake while reading out the web address for her forthcoming podcast, That’s After Life!.

However, things escalated when Esther went on to recall a conversation she previously had with GMB host Susanna Reid on BBC Breakfast about whether or not she could say the word “b******s” on live TV and radio.

After stumbling over her words while pointing listeners in the direction of her latest project, Dame Esther exclaimed: “Oh bum! Are you allowed to swear on Virgin Radio or is it pure?”

Chris then joked: “Yeah you can swear anywhere you like you’re Dame Esther Rantzen for heaven’s sake!”

Unfortunately, Esther misunderstood Chris’ witty remark, and went on to recall when she had to apologise for using bad language on the BBC.

She continued: “Okay, well I apologise… do you know once I had to apologise on BBC television because the lovely Susanna Reid was interviewing me when she was working for the BBC, before Strictly and all that.

“And she said, ‘The thing about older people’, because I am the unofficial older people correspondent, you know how you get labelled.

“Anyway, so Susanna Reid said to me that her mother said, ‘The problem that people have is that modern media like emails are so fast and old people can’t think that fast’.

“And I said, ‘What’s polite for b******s?’ and Susanna looked straight into camera and said, ‘I would like to apologise to any of our viewers that were offended by what Esther’s just said.’

“And I said, ‘But it’s an eight letter word, and I thought you were allowed to say eight letter words!’.

“And then there was a conversation about whether you can say  b******s on the radio,” Dame Esther giggled, not realising her mishap.

Chris was quick to shut the chat down, as he clarified that she couldn’t use foul language on Virgin Radio.

He replied: “Okay, you can’t say it again Esther, not even on Virgin Radio!”

Dame Esther then exclaimed: “Sorry, sorry! Did I say it twice?”

Chris went on to urge the star not to repeat the swear word for a third time, quipping: “Yeah it’s okay, don’t go for the hat-trick!

“But it’s great to have you back with us, I love it, in her 80s she’s getting so rebellious!”

After Chris ended his call with Esther, he couldn’t help but joke about his shock over the blunder.

He informed his listeners: “When I was a little boy watching That’s Life! with my mum and dad, if you’d have said to me the queen of the BBC, Dame Esther Rantzen, will come on your radio show one day, because you’re going to have one.

“And she will have a really intimate, friendly, conversation with you, and then just start swearing, I wouldn’t have believed you! Anyway, I must apologise once again.”

The television and radio personality then set the record straight on what he meant by joking that Esther could say whatever she likes on-air.

He continued: “When I said that she can do anything she likes, I was referring to her saying bums on the radio, I didn’t think she was then going to…”

“Up the ante,” Chris’ co-host Vassos Alexander then chimed.

Chris wrapped up the chat by saying: “She was always a unique spirit at the BBC, but what a legend!

“Again I do apologise, I must apologise for that because that’s the rules, but I don’t apologise for having Dame Esther on for a second!”
