Ed Sheeran breaks down mid performance as he reflects on friend Jamal Edwards’ death
Ed Sheeran broke down in tears during an emotional performance of his new album as he admitted he was ‘still not over’Jamal Edwards’ death.
The 32 year old pop sensation was performing at an intimate show in London when he dedicated two songs to friend Jamal – whodied aged 31 in February last year.
Jamal Edwards was a music entrepreneur, DJ and founder of SBTV – an online media platform aimed at discovering emerging artists in R&B and hip hop.
It started in 2006 and helped launch the careers of artists including Ed, Jessie J, Stormzy and Emeli Sandé.
Jamal went on to become an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, a charity set up by King Charles to help vulnerable young people get their lives on track.
But sadly he died last year from aheart attack after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol.
During the show with Apple Music Live at the Eventim Apollo in London on Wednesday, Ed dedicated songs Eyes Closed and Life Goes On to his friend Jamal.
According to theDaily Mail, the singer went on to tell the audience: "The last time I was in this venue was with my friend Jamal, to see a comedy show, and I've not been here since.
"The first time I ever played this song, I cried when I introduced it, I cried at the start, I cried at the end and… I'm going to cry now."
Before performing his track, Life Goes On, he admitted: "I felt like when Jamal passed away that I wanted the world to just stop, like it did when the Queen died."
Ed then added how he "didn't feel ready" and still doesn't – and explained how "everyone expects you to feel sad for a week or two" before moving on.
He revealed: "I'm still not over it, and I don't want to be."
Ed has been open about his grief following the death of Jamal.
In March this year, he said he would never do drugs again in an interview withRolling Stone Magazine.
He revealed he used to take drugs twice a day, but has now sworn off them after the shock of his friend’s death.
Ed added: "I would never, ever, ever touch anything again, because that’s how Jamal died. And that’s just disrespectful to his memory to even, like, go near."
Last week the singercried tears of joy afterwinning a copyright case that claimed that his 2014 hit Thinking Out Loud had plagiarised Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic Let’s Get It On.
Giving a statement following the victory, Ed joked: "It looks like I'm not going to have to retire from my day job after all."
He then added: "But at the same time, I'm unbelievably frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court."
And earlier this week, Ed revealed thathe had not been asked to perform at King Charles’ Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle – despite some reports suggesting he had snubbed the star-studded event.
