Chris Fountain discusses traumatic stroke that left him talking ‘like a toddler’

Chris Fountain says he couldn’t ‘read aloud’ after mini-stroke

Chris Fountain, best known as Tommy Duckworth in Coronation Street, has opened up about his stroke last August when a blood clot developed in his brain.

As he looked back on the traumatic event that disrupted his speech and left him talking “like a toddler”, he shared that he’s now made a full recovery although he fears it happening again.

On the anniversary of his life-threatening ordeal, he wrote: “Part of me is worrying, thinking, ‘Am I going to have another one today?'”

However, the TV star, who had heart surgery in the aftermath, then went on to reason: “Part of me is also super proud of how I’ve recovered.

“My speech is pretty much back to normal, I’ve run a marathon, I’m fit again,” the 35-year-old marvelled to his 132,000 Instagram followers.

“This time last year, I was staying in a hospital bed wondering what the hell is happening and here I am now feeling great,” he continued during an emotional video.

He then shared a throwback photo of himself lying in a hospital bed looking forlorn with tubes attached to illustrate how far he’d come since.

He captioned the snap: “1 year ago today. Life can change in an instant. I’ve had to make a lot of changes but things have gotten so much better.

“Be as positive as you can be, live life to the full and do not give up, no matter how hard things get.”

At the time of the incident, Chris was rushed to a specialist stroke unit at the Royal London Hospital where the actor was shocked to be told that he had a hole in his heart.

This had caused a blood clot to travel to his brain, triggering a stroke.

However, he wasted no time in running the London Marathon as soon as he was fit again, which he completed in just under four hours, to raise money for the Stroke Association.

After poignantly crossing the finish line back in April, he gave an emotional update online, declaring triumphantly: “”I DID IT!!!!!!!

“From having a stroke in August to running a sub 4 hour marathon. I am beyond proud of myself.

“THANKYOU to everyone who cheered, donated, ran with me and everything else in between. I’m so, so happy. Will never forget this feeling.”

Chris was previously a star in Hollyoaks, where he played Justin Burton for six years way back in 2003, before heading to the Cobbles for his role as Jack and Vera Duckworth’s grandson, Tommy.

He left the role in 2013 after a controversial freestyle rap video emerged.

While performing in a mask under the guise of The Phantom – a character he’d created – he talked about raping a woman on her birthday and punching someone in the face.

He has since apologised, and elaborated on the Mancs on the Mic podcast, in front of former Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas: “The context of the stuff that I said was horrendous.

“I would never think to say that to anybody, but 24-year-old me was just thinking, ‘I want to rap.’ I was just trying to do what everyone else was doing.”
