Dawson’s Creek vet Busy Philipps reveals her child Birdie, 12, is ‘femme-presenting nonbinary’… after sharing they ‘came out as gay’ at age 10

  • Busy previously revealed that Birdie came out as gay at 10-years-old
  • The actress also has a daughter Cricket, seven, with her director husband Marc Silverstein

Busy Philipps has revealed her 12-year-old child Birdie – who was born female – now identifies as ‘femme-presenting nonbinary’.

The former Dawson’s Creek star, 41, proudly discussed her child’s gender identity the June issue of  Health magazine while promoting her new Peacock series Girls5eva.

This comes after Philipps – who also has a seven-year-old daughter Cricket with director husband Marc Silverstein – shared on her podcast last year that Birdie came out to her at the age of 10.

Proud mom: Busy Philipps has revealed her 12-year-old child Birdie – who was born female – now identifies as ‘femme-presenting nonbinary’

Her new cover:  The former Dawson’s Creek star, 41, proudly discussed her child’s gender identity the June issue of Health magazine

In the Health interview, Busy shared Birdie’s identity when touching on wellness.

‘Expectations to take care of other people are put on girls from a very young age—I should say girls or femme-presenting kids. That’s what Birdie is, femme-presenting nonbinary,’ said Philipps.

She also relayed to writer Bethany Heitman that she had to explain to her mother Barbara Philipps, ‘You don’t have to understand it.’

On talking about Birdie’s pronouns and being nonbinary: ‘My mom is older and wants to understand the pronoun conversation more.

‘There are some really good books out there—like What’s Your Pronoun? Beyond He & She by Dennis Baron.

‘I said to my mother, “Here’s the deal: “You don’t have to understand it.” That’s how I feel about all human rights—you don’t have to understand it. You can choose to believe what you want, but you don’t get to have jurisdiction over anyone else’s body or belief system.’

Femme is a term that refers to a queer person whose gender expression is considered to be feminine. It was originally used to distinguish feminine lesbian and bisexual women from butch women, and it is still one of the main uses of the term, according to Dev Blair, a multimedia artist who is a nonbinary femme.

It is common for trans and nonbinary individuals to use the term to refer to their identity or expression even if they do not identify as lesbian or bisexual women, Dev added.

A closer look at the Hollywood vet: Busy, who is best known for her role on Dawson’s Creek with Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams as well as Cougartown with Courteney Cox, said she is teaching her kids to take care of themselves. ‘I think the secret with kids is leading by example,’ she said

In January, the star said on her show Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best that Birdie was ‘gay and out.’

She added on the podcast episode, ‘Birdie told us at 10 years old and we immediately… I mean, obviously, I knew that Birdie knew.’

Philipps also shared that Birdie prefers they/them pronouns.

Busy, who is best known for her role on Dawson’s Creek with Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams as well as Cougartown with Courteney Cox, also told Health magazine she is teaching her kids to take care of themselves.

‘I think the secret with kids is leading by example. I make a concerted effort to be aware of how I talk about diet and exercise around them—like, what my intention and goals are with those things,’ said Busy.

Her second daughter: The longtime actress also has Cricket Pearl, seven

‘I’m also lucky that I have a partner in Marc, who does cycling and works out for his own mental health,’ she said of I Feel Pretty writer and director Marc Silverstein.

‘We talk about therapy in our house and never shy away from hard conversations,’ she said.

‘I’ve always been open—but not in that “I’m not a regular mom; I’m a cool mom” way. I don’t want to be my kids’ best friend. I want them to know by watching me what my values are and the things that are important. You can tell your kids to stand up for what’s right until you’re blue in the face. If they don’t see you doing it, they never will.’

Busy also touched on what wellness means to her during her Health interview: ‘As a woman in this country, in this world, in this time, we all have a lot of responsibilities.

New show: Philipps as Summer, Sara Bareilles as Dawn Solano, Ashley Park as Ashley, Erika Henningsen as Young Gloria, Rene Elise Goldsberry as Wickie Roy in Girls5eva

Standing out in pink: Philipps has said she loves working with Tina Fey: ‘I don’t ever f***ing want to work with men, like, ever. I just don’t. I spent so many years of my life doing it and so, yeah, no. I’m at a point where I’m like, “The less men, the better”‘

‘I do think that the idea of securing your life mask before helping others is important.

‘The other thing is, make sure you have your s*** figured out and that you are being kind to yourself. For me, that’s one of the harder things. I can be really hard on myself.

‘Something I have been working on is thinking about the way I talk about my family and friends and then trying to be that kind and gentle on myself, too. It’s not easy, you know?’

She also said in her interview that she is happy to work with Tina Fey on her next show.

‘I don’t ever f***ing want to work with men, like, ever. I just don’t. I spent so many years of my life doing it and so, yeah, no. I’m at a point where I’m like, “The less men, the better.” Yeah. I mean, part of the appeal was obviously taking a look at just what the show was going to be and knowing I was mostly going to be working with women.’

Her main man: The star has been wed to I Feel Pretty director Marc Silverstein since 2007

And she also talked about a scar mammogram. ‘I’ve always been super timely with my checkups. I turned 40, and I knew that that’s when I needed to get a mammogram. But I was busy and traveling a lot. Then, COVID happened. So it got put off. Finally, I went. After the boob-squish thing, the tech said they wanted to take a few more pictures. Then the radiologist came in and said they wanted to do an ultrasound,’ the star shared.

‘That’s when I thought, “Oh no—is this going to be one of those things? I don’t want this to be a thing.” She said it was clearly a cyst and it looked a little weird, so they wanted to do a biopsy. I wasn’t really worried. My feeling is, there’s no reason to get upset until they tell you to because it’s a waste of energy—you can’t change the results. When those scary thoughts creep in, I say, “I see you, thoughts. I am going to put you away in this little cabinet.”

‘I’ve obviously been in therapy since I was a child. It’s the same thing you do during meditation: When thoughts creep in, you acknowledge them and put them aside. I had the biopsy and, thankfully, everything was OK. What I was glad for was that I told some friends about my experience and they ended up going to [get] the mammograms they had put off.’

The beauty was photographed by Grace Rivera as she wore colorful spring fashion.  The June issue of Health goes on sale May 14.
