Beyoncé's Mom Just Explained the Origin of Her Name

From the time she was a teenager in the hit R&B group Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé has stood out. From her stunning vocals to her legendary dance moves, it’s almost like she was born to be a star.

Never content with just being average, the Lemonade singer has continued to elevate herself and the music industry as she did with her 2014 self-titled album.

The Houston native’s iconic name has also set her apart from others, especially because it’s her given name, not a stage name that she created for her professional career. Now, the Black Is King entertainer‘s mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson is sharing the exact origins of her eldest daughter’s name.

Beyoncé is one of the most recognizable people on the planet

Along with her name, Beyoncé is one of the most recognizable people on the planet. However, despite the prevalence of social media and the assumptions about herself, her marriage to rapper, Jay-Z, and her family life, the singer has managed to live a very private life.

Keeping her personal life out of the spotlight and only revealing certain things through hr music has helped the Everything is Love singer find balance. She explained to Elle,

The predictable rock star DNA is a myth. I believe you don’t have to accept dysfunction to be successful. This is not to say that I have not struggled. I have the same pain that life brings to everyone else. I try to shift the stigma that says with fame there has to be drama. It is how you relate to your hardships and use that to evolve. And I try to keep real ones around me

This is the origin of Beyoncé’s name

Beyoncé has remained grounded in large part because of how she was raised. To this day, she is extremely close to her mother, philanthropist Tina Knowles-Lawson. During a recent appearance on In My Head with Heather Thomson podcast, Knowles-Lawson talked about the COVID-19 pandemic, giving back, and her family’s history. One of the major talking points was the origin of Beyoncé’s name.

“A lot of people don’t know that Beyoncé is my last name,” she revealed. “My name was Celestine Beyoncé, which at that time, was not a cool thing to have that weird name. I wanted my name to be Linda Smith because those were the cool names.”

Beyoncé was Knowles-Lawson’s maiden name before she married her ex-husband, Matthew Knowles, and subsequently took her current husband, actor Richard Lawson’s last name.
