A Dermatologist Explains Why Over 17,000 Five-Star Reviewers Say This Is the Only Moisturizer You'll Ever Need

Since I am a beauty writer, I am frequently at the receiving end of friends and friends of friends skincare and makeup inquiries. One of the concerns that I am frequently approached about is skin that's all of a sudden breaking out. What should they do? I have my own thoughts and methods, but the one I can actually stand behind is suggesting paring down from serums and moisturizers to a single product: First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream.

My first dalliance with Ultra Repair Cream came during my own bout of extreme mid-twenties acne. I was in such a panic over the state of my skin that I was making things worse by overcomplicating my routine. During a visit to the dermatologist's office, she explained that for the time being, I should only be doing Panoxyl face wash and FAB's moisturizer or something very similar. My skin has since healed, but I still go back to this pared-down routine during flare-ups and it's now my go-to advice for those dealing with a similar issue.

Shop now: $38; sephora.com, nordstrom.com, and ulta.com

I am not alone in my adoration or reliance on this moisturizer. According to Google Shopping's aggregate reviews of the product from retailers including Sephora and Ulta,  it has over 17,000 five-star reviews. The general sentiment of these accolades, as summed up by one Sephora reviewer is, "This saved me. I've tried other moisturizers and they clogged my pores, but this does the trick of a heavy moisturizer while being lightweight… I wake up with baby skin every time." Another reviewer wrote, "I guess the only negative thing about this cream is that I can't stop touching my face now!"

Gushing reviews aside, Dr. Dendy Engelman, MD, FACMS, FAAD, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist explains why Ulta Barrier Cream is such a universal hit. The ingredients are hydrating and nourishing enough that they are useful for all skin types, including people with severe dryness or eczema.

Going through the star ingredients Dr. Engelman tells InStyle, "colloidal oatmeal is the star ingredient. It's FDA-recommended for soothing and protecting skin, it also alleviates dryness and itching, and even serious symptoms caused by eczema, rashes, and other skin conditions." It doesn't end there, as Dr. Engelman further explains that the formula uses a plant-derived ingredient called allantoin. "It is a lesser-known ingredient to the public, but has excellent healing and skin-protecting properties. It has also been shown to help with tissue regrowth, which makes it a great asset in this skin-healing cream."

First Aid Beauty's Ultra Barrier Cream is suitable for all skin types, calming and nourishing, and according to reviewers, the $38 6-ounce jar also goes a long way (for me it was an entire year), so your money is well spent. Get your Ultra Barrier Repair Cream at Sephora, Nordstrom, and Ulta.
