UK weather forecast – HEAVY SNOW set to bury Britain after today's 60mph gales

Wet and windy conditions will affect nearly all parts of the UK on Thursday with a dreary weather front blasting in from the west.

Some areas of the far south will get off with drier spells – but here will see the worst of the winds, forecasters say.

Elsewhere, the rain will be severe at times as experts warn the Met Office could issue weather warnings for the blustery conditions.

From tomorrow through to early next week, snow is predicted for some hilly areas, with weather graphs showing cover increasing to extend over Northern Ireland and northern parts of the UK.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell told The Sun Online: "It’s looking wet and windy at times across the whole country and we could see gales.

"There could be some weather warnings for wind into the weekend so make sure to keep an eye out for those."

The Met Office's latest Thursday forecast said: "It will be a windy and wet day for many.

"There will be clear and dry spells in the south for much of the day.

"There will be outbreaks of rain and hill snow in Scotland, northern England and Wales.

"The rain is expected to move eastwards, affecting eastern England by evening. A dry evening in the west."

And forecasters at Meteogroup said: "Rain or showers for many through the day with strong winds for many parts, especially across the south and exposed coasts.

"Rain will tend to clear eastwards, but showers will persist in the west with some brighter, possibly sunny, spells."

Temperatures will remain in the high single figures for much of the country on Thursday, according to forecasts.

But this is set to change over the weekend as the mercury nosedives on the back of arctic air sweeping into the country.

NetWeather forecasts London will “feel like” -4C by Sunday night into Monday, -5C in Birmingham and -3C in Manchester.

Ms Mitchell from the Met Office added: "Snow looks to be mainly on Sunday.

"At the moment, it looks like snow at the lower levels will be across the northern parts of the UK."

There may also be snow on the hills in the south of England and the south of Wales on Sunday – when there’s also a risk of gales.

She added: "It will slowly get cooler throughout the rest of the week.

"Sunday will start to feel much colder in the north in particular."

High temperatures of around just 5C are expected as the week peters out – before even chillier nights arrive on Monday.

The mercury could plummet all the way down to -5C overnight in the countryside, with more frosty starts to follow.
