Backbench Tory MP Andrew Rosindell, 52, whose Facebook account was found to be part of a group supporting former EDL leader Tommy Robinson

A Conservative MP’s Facebook account belonged to a group supporting far-right mouthpiece Tommy Robinson.

The Times discovered that the account linked to Andrew Rosindell, who represents Romford in Greater London, became a member of the ‘Free Tommy’ group in May.

The group was formed to support the former leader of the English Defence League, an Islamophobic nationalist organisation, after he was sentenced to 13 months in prison for contempt of court.

Robinson – real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – was arrested on May 25 for potentially derailing a Huddersfield grooming gang trial that was subject to reporting restrictions.

He was live streaming a video to social media of himself speaking about the trial outside Leeds Crown Court.

Robinson was freed from prison in August after three leading judges quashed the contempt of court finding and formally released from bail in November after his case was sent to the Attorney General.

Screenshots seen by The Times show that account of Rosindell, 52, was a member of the group called ‘London says #FreeTommy NOW #MakeBritainGreatAgain #MBGA’.

According to the newspaper, the page said that the ‘purpose of Make Britain Great Again is to oppose the collapse of the British culture and nation’.

Robinson was arrested on 25 May for live streaming himself outside a Huddersfield grooming gang trial upon which there were court ordered reporting restrictions

Mr Rosindell told The Times: ‘This is completely false. I have never joined any such group on Facebook.

‘This is another one of those situations where others add you without permission, which has happened to me and other MPs in the past.’

However membership of Facebook groups can only occur when a user requests to join or accepts an invitation by another.
